Baz Luhrmann finds his 'King' for Elvis Presley biopic with actor Austin Butler

Austin Butler has been cast as the new King of Rock 'n' Roll in a new biopic film by Baz Luhrmann.

After rumours Harry Styles would secure the role, the Australian director confirmed the 27-year-old Nickelodeon star will play Elvis Presley.

It appears to have been a tough competition, as both The Fault In Our Stars actor Ansel Elgort and Whiplash lead Miles Teller also reportedly tested to be Presley.

Butler nodded to the announcement with a picture of a Deadline article featuring the news, captioning lyrics from the Love Me Tender song: "You have made my life complete, and I love you so."

Photos of the young actor and historic singer placed side-by-side make for a decent comparison.

Director Luhrmann, who's distinctive film accolade includes Great Gatsby and Romeo + Juliet, said in a statement: "[After] A journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world's most iconic musical figures".

Austin, who is dating High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens, has appeared last year in the Denzel Washington Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh, and also has a role in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie.

His girlfriend Venessa took to social media to congratulate him on his new role, posting to her 34.8m followers: "I AMMMM OVERRRR THE F***ING MOOOOOOOOONNNNN. I CANT WAIT SO PROUD OF MY HONEYYYYY!!!"

The production of the biography film will begin early next year with Hollywood star Tom Hanks starring as Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

A release date is yet to be confirmed.

The biopic will come after cinemas have seen award-winning Bohemian Rhapsody starring Rami Malek and Rocketman starring Taron Egerton.
