In a battle of strong female characters on the big screen, Priyanka Chopra’s debut Hollywood film Baywatch was overpowered by Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman at the Indian box office.
According to Box Office India, Wonder Woman, the fifth film in the DC Extended Universe, made Rs 2.5 crore on its opening day. Baywatch, which has similarly underperformed at the US box office, made Rs 1.5 crore.
Combined with negative reviews (it sits at 20% on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes) and lack of a strong marketing campaign, Baywatch suffered a fate similar to its disappointing debut in the States, where it scored one of the lowest openings of star Dwayne Johnson’s career, and contributed to the worst Memorial Day weekend in nearly 20 years.
Wonder Woman, meanwhile, is overperforming. Thanks to strong reviews (93% on Rotten Tomatoes), and positive buzz, the film is projected to make approximately $100 million in the US.
