Baylor (1-0) vs. UTSA (1-0) Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

It’s just one game against Incarnate Word, but the UTSA defense started to look the part again after a rough 2018 The pass rush got to the Cardinal backfield, the run D allowed just 28 yards, and it was the type of game that showed things might be changing back around.

On the offensive side, starting quarterback Frank Harris was fantastic. He completed 28-of-36 passes for 206 yards and three scores with a pick, and he ran for 123 yards and 15 scores.

It’s going to take a whole lot of firepower to keep up with Baylor, but if the run defense can hold up, and if Harris can keep the chains moving, the Roadrunners have the makeup to potentially shorten the game like they’ll need to.

Why Baylor Will Win

UTSA doesn’t have that firepower.

Baylor was fantastic in a light scrimmage against Stephen F. Austin, with the quarterbacks combining to throw for 250 yards, and the ground game doing whatever it wanted to averaging over seven yards per pop.

The Baylor defense isn’t going to be anything special – UTSA should be able to go on a few good marches – but get ready for the quick strikes. Charlie Brewer should be able to push the ball deep on the Roadrunner secondary that’s about to get tested, and the ground game that had three runners average over 13 yards per carry should crank out yards in chunks.

UTSA needs to grind – it had the ball for 40 minutes against Incarnate Word, but Baylor will score in a flash.

What’s Going To Happen

The UTSA style will keep the game from getting out of hand, and Harris will give the Baylor linebackers a whole slew of problems, but Baylor will be too balanced and too good.

The Roadrunner offense is better than it was over the end of last year, but it’s not there yet for a game like this.
