Bayeux Tapestry ticket sales break British Museum record

  • The British Museum recorded its highest single day of ticket sales in history, generating over £2.5 million for the upcoming Bayeux Tapestry exhibition.
  • Tens of thousands of people joined an online queue, which at one point had a nine-hour wait, resulting in the museum's website experiencing 4.7 times its average daily traffic.
  • The historic Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the Battle of Hastings, will be displayed on British soil for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, from September 2026 to July 2027.
  • Tickets released on Wednesday have now sold out, but the museum plans to offer more opportunities later in the year for dates spanning January to March and April to July.
  • Dr Nicholas Cullinan OBE, director of the British Museum, stated that the unprecedented demand reflects the public's significant appetite for arts and culture.
