Bayern Munich have been confirmed as winners of their 33rd Bundesliga title after second-placed Bayer Leverkusen were unable to beat Freiburg on Sunday. The success is a first major trophy for Harry Kane as a player and for Vincent Kompany as a manager.
It had looked like Bayern were going to seal the title on Saturday at RB Leipzig but a last-gasp goal from Yussuf Poulsen delayed their celebrations once again.
However, Leverkusen conceded goals either side of half-time at Freiburg to go 2-0 down – including an own goal from defender Piero Hincapié – and their chase ended despite a late flurry which saw them equalise through Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.
After Leverkusen’s draw, Kane posted a video on social media of himself and his Bayern teammates celebrating with a rendition of Queen’s We Are The Champions, while players enjoyed a beer.
Last season, Kane’s first in Germany, the former Tottenham striker scored 36 times in the league to claim the European Golden Shoe but missed out on the title because of Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten season under Xabi Alonso, while Stuttgart were runners-up.
This season his 24 goals so far have helped restore Bayern to supremacy under Kompany, who this time last year was about to be relegated from the Premier League with Burnley. Kane is on track to become the first player to win the top scorer title in both of his first two Bundesliga seasons.
Bayern, who were also champions in 1932 in the pre-Bundesliga era, have now won 12 titles in 13 seasons and 28 more than the next most successful sides, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Bayern have endured some disappointment this season, losing 1-0 at home to Leverkusen in the German Cup in December and being eliminated 4-3 by Inter in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Alonso, who is being linked with a move to Real Madrid, will finish the season empty handed, with Leverkusen having been stunned by third-tier Arminia Bielefeld in this month’s German Cup semi-finals.
