Bayern Munich vs Auckland City LIVE
Bayern Munich’s opening Club World Cup tie made for uncomfortable viewing as the 34-time German champions stamped out the star-crossed dreamers Auckland City. The Kiwi contingent came into the tie as the Club World Cup’s only amateur side, with many of their players having to take time away from work or school to play in the United States.
They have considerable pedigree in the tournament despite their status, and are making their 12th appearance this summer, but will be very lucky to match their best-ever finish of third at the new-look tournament. The tie was a clear David vs Goliath tale, but, speaking pre-match, club captain Mario Ilich confirmed that Auckland were daring to dream as they carried the flag for amateur footballers around the world.
Bayern, though, had no time for such fairytales as they embarked on a machinistic dismantling of the minnows. Fans were made to wait just six minutes for Kingsley Coman’s opener, and the Bavarians did not let off the gas, romping to a ten-goal demolition job thanks in part to Jamal Musiala’s second-half hat trick.

Bayern Munich 6-0 Auckland City
18:11 , Arthur Ferridge49mins: The 17-year-old Karl shoots from a tight angle, and Tracey catches it.
Bayern Munich 6-0 Auckland City
18:08 , Arthur Ferridge47mins: We are in for more of the same, it seems. Bayern kick off the half with a period of sustained goal mouth pressure.
2ND HALF: Bayern Munich 6-0 Auckland City
18:07 , Arthur FerridgeWe are back underway with what could be a long 45 minutes for Auckland.
Bayern replace Coman and Olise with Gnabry and Karl.
HT: Bayern Munich 6-0 Auckland City
17:51 , Arthur FerridgeThe referee puts Auckland out of their misery, but only temporarily. Coman and Olise have a brace each, with Muller and Boey completing a devastating first-half.
GOAL! Bayern Munich 6-0 Auckland City

Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:45 , Arthur Ferridge43mins: Coman fires from the edge of the area as he looks to tie up his hat-trick before the halftime break. Tracey gets down to it, though. The Auckland shot-stopper has had a lot to do today but is making a fairly good account of himself.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:43 , Arthur Ferridge42mins: Stanisic passes back to Neuer, perhaps in an act of mercy for a keeper who must be quite profoundly bored. He is yet to face a shot today.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:41 , Arthur Ferridge39mins: The latest Bayern attack ends in a Boey cross which finds the forward-thinking Guerreiro, whose headed effort is well wide.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:39 , Arthur Ferridge38mins: Muller puts in a gorgeous cross for Kane, which is just beyond the reach of the defender, but the striker does not chase it.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:38 , Arthur Ferridge37mins: Another wayward cross falls to Boey at the edge of the area, but this time he thinks better of shooting for the back pages. His cross, though, is not much to write home about.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:36 , Arthur Ferridge35mins: This is a generally sloppy performance from Bayern, despite the scoreline. They are full of errors, their passing is untidy, and their attacking unimaginative. Had they opened their campaign at the Club World Cup against Benfica or Boca, we could be seeing a very different scoreline.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:33 , Arthur Ferridge31mins: Another save from Tracey, who gets down quickly to deny Harry Kane’s close-range effort.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City

Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:26 , Arthur Ferridge25mins: Where do Auckland City go from here? That is three goals conceded in four minutes. They have to pick up the pieces sooner rather than later and do what they can to keep this respectable.
GOAL! Bayern Munich 4-0 Auckland City
17:23 , Arthur Ferridge22mins: Prematch, Standard Sport predicted a 6-0 Bayern win. If things continue in this fashion, we could fly past that post before the half-hour mark. Coman bags his brace.
GOAL! Bayern Munich 3-0 Auckland City
17:21 , Arthur Ferridge20mins: Olise this time! Bayern are running away with this. Muller plays a cross in to Kane, who misses his effort, but Olise is there to pick up the pieces and tap home.

Coman knocks a cross down to Boey in the area, and he finishes powerfully from close range.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:18 , Arthur Ferridge17mins: Lobo, Auckland’s left-back, is a university student and will have to sit an exam from his hotel room during this tournament. Impressive commitment.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:17 , Arthur Ferridge15mins: To be frank, Bayern don’t look particularly good despite enjoying nearly 70% of possession and a handful of shots on target early on. Understandably, they seem a little jetlagged, putting in some sloppy passes and lazy tackles.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:14 , Arthur Ferridge12mins: A little foray forward for Auckland ends in a goal kick.
Bayern go down the other end and Kane heads at goal, but Tracey produces another impressive save before the referee calls the play dead.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:12 , Arthur Ferridge11mins: Boey plays a good cross in which falls to Pavlovic, who shoots wide. Not a brilliant effort, but worrying that Bayern are creating so many chances in the early stages.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:11 , Arthur Ferridge11mins: Worth pointing out that Tah got the assist for Coman’s opener. Not a bad start to your debut at all.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:11 , Arthur Ferridge9mins: Auckland doing their best to hold onto possession here. They take a throw-in in the attacking third and pass all the way back to the keeper Tracey who hoofs it long. Bayern recover.
Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:09 , Arthur Ferridge8mins: Another Bayern corner falls to Sacha Boey, who fires over on the volley.
GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Auckland City
17:07 , Arthur Ferridge6mins: Well, so much for the Auckland resistance. Kingsley Coman opens the scoring with his second header of the afternoon.
Bayern Munich 0-0 Auckland City
17:06 , Arthur Ferridge5mins: A stunning cross from Olise is headed goalwards by Coman, but the Auckland ‘keeper Tracey makes a fantastic save to deny him. Corner to Bayern.
Bayern Munich 0-0 Auckland City
17:05 , Arthur Ferridge4mins: We are already getting glimpses of how this game will probably run. Bayern are passing around the edge of the Auckland penalty area, and the Kiwis are content to sit a very low block. They have every man behind the ball.
Bayern Munich 0-0 Auckland City
17:04 , Arthur Ferridge3mins: Bayern flirt with the Auckland penalty area but are yet to offer any serious threat. An Auckland defender is fouled on the edge of his own area, and a free kick if given.
For your information, dear reader, VAR is in play at this competition.
Bayern Munich 0-0 Auckland City
17:02 , Arthur Ferridge1mins: Seems apt to point out that the first goalscorer today will also be the first goalscorer of the tournament after last night’s curtain-raiser between Inter Miami and Al Ahly ended goalless.
KICK OFF: Bayern Munich 0-0 Auckland City
17:01 , Arthur FerridgeWe are underway!
The players are out!
16:58 , Arthur FerridgeIn a slightly awkward spectacle, the players walk out one-by-one after being introduced by the stadium announcer.
An awful lot of seats remain empty at the 26,000-capacity TQL Stadium.
Kick off comes next
16:51 , Arthur FerridgeWe are just ten minutes from kick-off now. Auckland City face what is arguably the toughest tie in the club’s history, while Bayern look to avoid an embarassing defeat.
Who will come out on top in Cincinnati?
Auckland City captain previews the tie
16:46 , Arthur FerridgeAuckland City captain Mario Ilich previews the tie.
“We are absolutely excited to be here, it has been a long time coming. The day has finally come and we want to show what we are all about.
“We are a small family oriented club. Everyone at the club and everyone who has been is part of the club.
“We are doing it for all the staff, all the volunteers, and our family back home. We represent all the amateur clubs in the world, too.”
Bayern Munich's Club World Cup pedigree
16:44 , Arthur FerridgeRelative to Auckland City, Bayern Munich are a deeply inexperienced Club World Cup side. They have only played it twice, relative to Auckland’s 11 appearances.
The key difference, you ask? Bayern have never failed to win the Club World Cup, winning it both times they have entered (2013, 2020).
They have also won the tournament’s predecessor, the Intercontinental Cup, on two occasions (1976, 2001).
The standard is set, then.

Coman previews the tournament
16:33 , Arthur FerridgeKingsley Coman speaks ahead of kick-off: “Its a bit like the national team. We're almost all national players, so that is similar. There are seven games to win and we have to be ready and find our rhythm. We all know what we have to do, and we will try to go as far as we can. When you are at Bayern Munich you always try to win, no matter what.”
Auckland's penchant for upsets
16:31 , Arthur FerridgeThis is Auckland City’s 12th appearance at the Club World Cup, and we have seen in the past that they have something of a penchant for upsets.
This is certainly their biggest ask so far, though. What resistance can Ivan Vicelich’s men offer here?
Cincinnati weather report
16:22 , Arthur FerridgeIt is toasty in the American Midwest.
The temperature currently sits at 24°C, or, for the Americans, 76°F.
Anyone who has had the privilege of visiting the Midwest will be familiar with its suffocating summer humidity, and there is no change today. The barometers are clocking in at a markedly muggy 80% humidity.
Given the warm climate of New Zealand and the more temperate conditions in Munich, you would think that gives a slight advantage to our underdogs this afternoon.
Bayern Munich are on location
16:15 , Arthur FerridgeThe face of Bayern Munich Thomas Muller disembarks the team bus in Cincinnati.

Vincent Kompany goes strong
16:10 , Arthur FerridgeWell, isn’t that a statement from Vincent Kompany!
He goes remarkably strong with a squad featuring some of the most recognisable names in football: Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Harry Kane, Michael Olise.
Add to the mix the new signing Jonathan Tah, bought from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. He was due to join as a free agent, but Bayern reportedly paid just shy of £700,000 to secure his services early.
Leroy Sane drops to the bench alongside Jamal Musiala.
Auckland City confirmed team news
16:06 , Arthur FerridgeIvan Vicelich names his side.
Auckland City starting XI: Tracey, Lobo, Boxall, Mitchell, Murati, Den Heijer, Ilich, Garriga, Yoo, Bevan, Manickum
Bayern Munich confirmed team news
16:02 , Arthur FerridgeVincent Kompany names his squad to face Auckland City.
Bayern Munich starting XI: Neuer; Tah, Kimmich, Coman, Boey, Muller, Stanisic, Pavlovic, Guerreiro, Olise, Kane
Subs: Peretz, Urbig, Upamecano, Gnabry, Goretzka, Sane, Palhinha, Bischof, Laimer, Krattenmacher, Kusi-Asare, Musiala, Karl, Santos, Azou
How did Auckland City qualify for the Club World Cup?
15:53 , Arthur FerridgeI am sure you have asked yourself at some stage this afternoon how an amateur side managed to qualify for the Club World Cup. A valid question! Here’s how:
The short answer is that they were among the highest-ranked sides in the Oceania Football Confederation over the past four years.
They have won Oceania’s Champions League a record 13 times and are currently on a run of four-straight wins in the competition. Add to the mix a Chatham cup win in 2022 and league titles in both 2022 and 2024, alongside three Northern League wins.
As far as Kiwi football goes, Auckland City is a formidable outfit.
New Zealand does have two professional sides in Wellington Phoenix and Auckland FC, but given they both play in the Australian A-League, are not eligible to play in either Asian continental competitions of the OFC Champions League.
As such, they had no avenue to qualify for the Club World Cup, opening the door for the minnows Auckland City to step up.
Lineups come next
15:43 , Arthur FerridgeTeam news will be dropping shortly.
How strong of a squad will Kompany name? Stay tuned to find out!
Auckland City's Club World Cup pedigree
15:38 , Arthur FerridgeYou may be surprised to learn that this is Auckland City’s third appearance at the Club World Cup.
They first appeared in 2009, just five years on from their founding, beating Emirati side Al Ahli 2-0 in the play-in. They were then beaten in the quarter-finals by Mexico’s Atlante before downing Congolese side TP Mazembe in a playoff for fifth place.
Their second appearance came in 2014, where they played in by beating Moghreb Tetouan, then champions of Morocco, on penalties. They went on to qualify for the quarter finals by beating ES Setif 1-0.
Their campaign was then halted by Argentinian side San Lorenzo, who won 2-1, though they clinched third with a penalty shootout win over Cruz Azul.
The 2014 tournament was special, though, as now-interim manager Ivan Vicelich finished third in the player of the tournament standings, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos.
All smiles as Auckland arrive in Cincinnati
15:31 , Arthur FerridgeWho has two thumbs and is about to play the biggest game of his career? Why, Adam Bell of Auckland City, of course!

Today's situation
15:26 , Arthur FerridgeThere is very little on the line today given it is only the first tie of Group C. There are no progressions and no eliminations to be confirmed today.
But to further rain on the Auckland parade, they have been drawn into one of the most difficult groups possible.
Joining them and Bayern are Boca Juniors, arguably the best side in South America, and Benfica, arguably the best team in Portugal.
Boca and Benfica play their first tie tomorrow.
What does this match mean to Auckland?
15:19 , Arthur FerridgeEverything, and that is no exaggeration.
Speaking ahead of the tie, Auckland’s interim coach Ivan Vicelich revealed that many of his players have been forced to take unpaid leave from their day jobs so as to attend the tournament.
He made sure to temper expectations as he played down upset predictions.
He said: “We’re realistic. We’re up against one of the best teams in the world and favourites to win the tournament. We understand the qualities you need to be able to perform at the very top. The most important thing for us was qualifying – performing really well over the last two or three years and getting to the tournament. Now that we’re there, we’re going to try and prepare as best we can.
“I’ve always got to do a combination of annual leave and leave without pay. I’ll be suffering a bit with the rent and bills and stuff like that, but to play against Bayern and Benfica and Boca – 100% it’s worth it.”
Bavarian legends bow out
15:11 , Arthur FerridgeThe Club World Cup will be the final times that either Thomas Muller or Leroy Sane pull on a Bayern Munich shirt.
Muller departs with an extensive silverware resume, having spent his entire career with the club, debuting in 2008. It is not yet clear what his next steps are.
Sane, however, has called time on his five-year stay at the Allianz, and will join Galatasaray on a free transfer following the Club World Cup.
Both will be looking to end their time with the club with one last trophy.

Today's venue
15:04 , Arthur FerridgeThe second match of the Club World Cup will be hosted at the TQL Stadium.
For a day job, the TQL plays host to MLS side FC Cincinnati, currently second in this year’s Eastern Conference.
It opened in 2021 and holds 26,000 fans.

Standard Sport's prediction
15:00 , Arthur FerridgeThis is something of a fairytale outing for Auckland City. An amateur side from New Zealand taking time off their day jobs to travel halfway around the world and face one of the biggest sides in the game - this is what the beautiful game is all about!
In spite of this, one would not expect the on-pitch affair to be quite so dreamy, given Bayern’s U18s likely carry more monetary value than Auckland’s firsts.
Both sides will likely come into the tie somewhat jetlagged, which is where Bayern’s wealth and stature will come in - they can afford the luxury comforts to minimise such factors’ impact, while Auckland likely cannot.
This could be a long afternoon for the Kiwi dreamers.
Bayern Munich to win, 6-0
Auckland City team news
14:50 , Arthur FerridgeThere are very few big names to report on in the Auckland City squad.
Myer Bevan was their top scorer this season, with eight goals. He returns to the States having formerly featured in the MLS for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The predominantly Kiwi squad features one Irishman in Dylan Connolly, a Spaniard in Gerard Garriga, a Colombian in Jerson Lagos, and China’s Zhou Tong. There is also Kosovan representation from Regont Murati.
Bayern Munich early team news
14:45 , Arthur FerridgeVincent Kompany is not expected to name a full-strength side here, quite the opposite.
Dayot Upamecano and Jamal Musiala have both made the travelling squad despite their pair missing the end of the season through injury. Kim Min-Jae has also travelled, as have new arrivals Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof.
Leroy Sane and Thomas Muller will both play in the US despite being set to leave the club this summer, while Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito are both absent through injury.
