Full time: Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeep! It’s all over at the Allianz Arena, but there’s another 90 minutes to come at the Bernabeu next season. In a weird game of two halves, Real Madrid were fairly fortunate to be just one goal behind at the break, but they roared back into contention in the second half and scored two goals courtesy of Cristiano Ronaldo. Bayern Munich were reduced to 10 men with the second half dismissal of Javi Martinez and looked exhausted after playing 30 minutes with 10 men. Arturo Vidal scored their goal and he should have had two more. The Chilean missed with a fairly straightforward header and then ballooned a penalty over the bar. Manuel Neuer was outstanding for Bayern and kept his side in the tie with a series of brilliant saves.

90 min: Two or three yards from goal, Cristiano Ronaldo trips over his own feet while trying to get on the end of a Dani Carvajal cross.

Updated

90+1 min: Ramos runs from an offside position to power Toni Kroos’s free-kick past Manuel Neuer with a superb header, but his celebrations of Real Madrid’s third goal are curtailed when the linesman flags for offside. That is an superb bit of officiating.

89 min: Real Madrid go in search of a thirds, with Asensio and Marcelo combing down the left flank. Play switches side and James is brought down by Arturo Vidal in the channel between touchline and penalty area. Vidal gets a yellow card for a the foul on James and is lucky not to get another one for a petulant little kick at Luka Modric. It’s been an eventful evening for the Chilean.

86 min: Real Madrid have gone from being a goal down and completely under the cosh to being 2-1 leaders who are completely bossing the game. The final whistle can’t come quickly enough for 10-man Bayern, who will still fancy their chances at the Bernabeu next week.

85 min: Asensio, who’s been very impressive since replacing Gareth Bale, tries his luck from a fair way out. It’s a tame effort and Neuer gathers comfortably.

83 min: Real Madrid substitution: Karim Benzema off, James Rodriguez on.

82 min: Bayern substitution: Thomas Muller off, Kinsgley Coman on. Muller’s had a quiet game tonight - his team have missed the in-form Robert Lewandowski.

80 min: Marcello goes close with a splendid effort from inside the area. From the left-hand side of the box, he lashes across the face of the bouncing ball with the outside of his left boot, trying to force it around Neuer and inside the post. It was wide, but not by a huge amount. If it had gone in, physicists everywhere would have been puzzling over it for years.

78 min: Luka Modric tries his luck with a long range effort that bounces in front of the diving Manuel Neuer, but doesn’t trouble the goalkeeper unduly.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-2 Real Madrid (Ronaldo 77)

Ronaldo!!! Asensio picks out Cristiano Ronaldo in the penalty area and the Real Madrid star gets in front of Jerome Boateng to prod home from about seven yards out to register a century of European club goals.

75 min: And again! This time Neuer keeps out a Ronaldo rocket with a powerful one-handed stop that would would have resulted in a broken wrist for any normal human. Moments previously, he’d got down to keep out an Asensio effort in more orthodox fashion.

73 min: Neuer saves again!!! The German makes it a hat-trick of fantastic saves when he blocks a Benzema shot with his feet.

70 min: Marco Asensio tees up Karim Benzema with a fine ball, but the French striker heads wide. He should have done better. Manuel Neuer leathers the ball the length of the pitch, putting the fear of god into Nacho, who clears under pressure from Muller.

Updated

69 min: Since Javi Martinez’s dismissal, Bayern have moved David Alaba to centre-back and put Bernat in at left-back. Costa has replaced Ribery on the left-wing, while Thomas Muller is now playing alone up front.

67 min: Sergio Ramos steps up to take the free-kick, but whips it wide of the upright. It wasn’t a bad effort from the edge of the penalty area, a little right of the D.

65 min: Real Madrid win a free-kick in a good position outside the Bayern penalty area for a blatant Franck Ribery hand-ball. It’ll be the Frenchman’s last action of the game, as he’s replaced by Douglas Costa.

63 min: Bayern Munich keep plugging on with everything going wrong for them in this second half. Carlo Ancelotti shuffles his pack: Xabi Alonso goes off and is replaced by defender Juan Bernet.

Red card! Javi Martinez is sent off

60 min: For the second time in quick succession, Javi Martinez is booked for a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo near the halfway line. Two yellows equals one red and he is sent from the field. It was a cynical foul, with Martinez taking one for the team in order to stop a Real Madrid counter-attack. His team must now play on without him.

57 min: Ronaldo is fouled by Javi Martinez in the centre-circle and the Bayern Munich man gets booked for his troubles. Real Madrid substitution: Marco Asensio on for Gareth Bale, who doesn’t look best pleased.

55 min: Another splendid save from Manuel Neuer, who tips over a Bale header from point-blank range after Modric had powered a cross on to the Welshman’s head. Nothing comes of the ensuing corner. Bale can’t believe Neuer kept that one out - that’s two wonderful saves he’s made tonight.

53 min: Karim Benzema goes slaloming down the right flanks, cuts inside and looks to be on the verge of waltzing through the entire Bayern Munich defence until somebody erects a road-block.

52 min: Shortly before Ronaldo’s goal, Xabi Alonso was booked for a tug on the shirt of Luka Modric.

49 min: Real Madrid embark on the counter-attack and from the left channel, Bale picks out Ronaldo on the edge of the penalty area. The goal-scorer’s first touch is like that of a street-mugger and a good chance goes begging.

Updated

48 min: That was a fine goal from Ronaldo, who hadn’t scored in the Champions League since the second match in the group stages, some 11 hours of playing time ago. He made a darting run across the penalty area to get on the end of a low, hard Dani Carvajal cross and guide the ball across the face of goal and into the corner at the far post.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-1 Real Madrid (Ronaldo 47)

He shoots! He scores! Ronaldo volleys across the face of goal and into the bottom left-hand corner. It’s his 99th European club goal.

Second half: Bayern Munich 1-0 Real Madrid

46 min: Real Madrid get the ball rolling for the second half, with no changes of personnel on either side. On BT Sport, the commentator name-checks former Bayern Munich legend Steffen Effenburg, a name that calls the phrase “red leather trousers” to this reporter’s mind. That’s quite a legacy.

That penalty decision ...

Replays suggest that Bayern Munich were very lucky to win that penalty and did the decent thing by missing it. Franck Ribery lashed a shot into the Real penalty area and it hit Dani Carvajal’s upper arm. There was nothing the defender could have done about it.

I have to say that, while I am prepared to concede that my esteemed colleague Andy “Top Brass” Brassell has forgotten more about football than most of us will ever know, I don’t agree with his first-half assessment. I think Real have been second best in almost every department this evening and can consider themselves extremely lucky not to be a lot further behind.

Half-time: Bayern Munich 1-0 Real Madrid

Bayern Munich go in for the half-time brew with a 1-0 lead, but should have a much bigger lead. Arturo Vidal put them ahead with a towering header, before missing the target with a similar effort. Determined to be the centre of attention, he then skied a penalty that Bayern were perhaps fortunate to get in the first place.

45+1 min: It could be argued that justice was done there, as I thought the penalty was a bit harsh. The ball hit Carvajal’s arm but I’m not so sure there was a huge amount he could have done about it. Before the controversy, Ronaldo had brought a good save out of Manuel Neuer with a low drive. From the ensuing corner, Toni Kroos shot narrowly wide before getting booked shortly afterwards for a challenge on Thomas Muller.

ARTURO VIDAL MISSES!!!

45 min: Good lord, that was hideous. Arturo Vidal sends his spot-kick into outer space and it’s no surprise seeing he was leaning backwards like a limbo-dancer as he took it. That was dreadful.

40 min: Arturto Vidal misses a glorious opportunity to double Bayern Munich’s lead. Robben was the provider, sending in a wonderful cross that Vidal leapt to win cleanly, only to power his header wide of the left upright. He should have scored!!!

Updated

39 min: From not too far outside the Real penalty area, Philipp Lahm nutmegs Sergio Ramos to pass the ball to the feet of Thomas Muller. He has his back to goal and can’t sort those feet out in time to unleash a shot. What looked an excellent scoring opportunity goes to waste.

37 min: Casemiro returns to action again and appears to be moving reasonably freely. The ball is despatched to Robben on the right wing once again and he jinks this way and that before sending a cross fizzing straight at Real goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

35 min: More pressure from Bayern, whose flow is halted when Casemiro goes to ground again after a collision of sorts with Vidal. He stuck out a leg, which the Munich Mohican ran into, hurting his knee. For the second time in as many minutes, Casemiro is escorted to the touchline by a physio. Despite waving the stretcher-bearers away, he may not be fit to continue this time.

Updated

34 min: Play resumes and Jerome Boateng attempts to pick out a Thomas Muller run in behind Marcelo with a long ball from deep. The idea is splendid but the execution isn’t. He slightly overhits his pass and it runs out of play for a Real Madrid goal-kick.

31 min: There’s a break in play as Casemiro goes down with a bang on the noggin, receives treatment and then makes his way over to the fourth official to await permission to come back on. He looks fine.

29 min: At around the same time that Bayern Munich went ahead, Leicester City have fallen behind at against Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon. It’s sad news for their patriotic, Gibraltar-loving fans who behaved with such decorum in the Spanish capital’s main square this afternoon. One suspects most of the bozos in question couldn’t point to Gibraltar on a map.

27 min: The numerous corners won by Bayern Munich eventually pay dividends. The ball was floated towards the far post by Thiago and Arturo Vidal rose high above Nacho to thump an unstoppable header past Keylor Navas.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Real Madrid (Vidal 25)

Bayern lead! They go ahead courtesy of a wonderful header from Arturo Vidal.

24 min: Robben wins another corner for his team , who take it short. After more patient build-up, Robben tries a shot which is blocked. Franck Ribery follows up and his volley goes out for a corner off Marcelo.

Updated

22 min: Robben, Lahm and Thiago combine patiently in the Real Madrid left back area, eventually teeing up David Alaba for a shot on goal. He fires high and wide from distance under pressure from Gareth Bale.

20 min: Robben takes on Ramos down the right flank and cuts inside and wins a corner with his attempted cross. The ball’s sent into the area, where Thomas Muller is beaten in the air by Marcelo.

18 min: Chance! Toni Kroos sends a wonderful cross from deep and from the edge of the Bayern six-yard box, Karim Benzema’s downwards header bounces up and looks to be heading into the top corner until Manuel Neuer gets across to claw it on to the angle of upright and cross-bar. A fine header and a splendid save. Benzema leapt like a salmon to get his head over that ball.

17 min: Real Madrid get a corner. Kroos’s out-swinger is cleared by Casemiro.

16 min: Ronaldo gets the ball over the defensive wall and the crossbar. Not even close.

14 min: Cristiano Ronaldo runs at Lahm and plays the ball to Karim Benzema on the edge of the penalty area. He’s fouled by Boateng, who gifts Real Madrid a free-kick just outside the Bayern Munich box, straight in front of goal. No prizes for guessing who’ll be taking this.

12 min: THere’s a break in play as Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal goes down after a collision with Jerome Boateng. It looked fairly innocuous, but he seems winded. He gets to his feet, makes for the touchline and is waved back on by the referee.

10 min: After the excitement of Borussia Dortmund 2-3 Monaco, this match is comparatively pedestrian and being punctuated by no end of niggly little fouls. Bayern go on the attack with Arturo Vidal playing a hopeful ball forward. Sergio Ramos leaps to head it clear.

9 min: Xabi Alonso curls the free-kick across the edge of the six-yard box, where Thomas Muller tries to attack it. Gareth Bale heads clear.

9 min: Arjen Robben is brought down by Toni Kroos as Bayern gallop upfield on a counter-attack. Free-kick for the hosts, wide on the right touchline.

7 min: A period of pressure from Real Madrid, with Bale whipping a cross-field pass towards Marcelo on the left flank.

6 min: Thiago is penalised for a foul on Ronaldo on the halfway line and shakes his head at the injustice of it all. It was a fair cop. Bayern have started the stronger in this game, but no chances of note for either side in the early stages.

4 min: Alonso’s delivery is uncharacteristically poor and the ball is put out for a goal kick at the near post.

2 min: Bayern Munich’s players are attired in red shirts, white shorts and red socks tonight. Real’s wear black shirts, black short and black socks. Xabi plays a raking pass from deep out to David Alaba on the left flank and Bayern win another corner.

1 min: It’s an early corner to Bayern after good work down the left flank by Arjen Robben. Nothing comes of it.

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid is under way ...

1 min: Bayern kick-off at the Allianz Arena.

Not long now ...

Sergio Ramos and Philipp Lahm lead the teams out on to the pitch, where they line up for the Champions League anthems. Kick-off is just moments away.

Not long now ...

We’re approaching kick-off time in the Allianz Arena, where it’s nigh on impossible to predict a winner. I fancy Bayern Munich to win tonight and over the two legs, but not so confidently that I’m prepared to wager any money on it. A good match will do for me.

It's all over in Dortmund ...

In the day’s opening match, yesterday’s postponed fixture between Borussia Dortmund and Monaco has ended with a 3-2 win to the Ligue 1 side. Borussia Dortmund were awful in the first half and that’s completely understandable after yesterday’s traumatic events, but really raised their game in the second half. It’s finely poised for the second leg.

Zinedine Zidane speaks

Asked about recent criticism directed at Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid manager had this to say at yesterday’s press conference. “They’re very experienced players and the better player you are, the more criticism you attract. I’ve got three players with a lot of character and they’re not fazed by this, quite the opposite. These are the sort of games they relish. I consider Bale to be close to being on top form. His lay-off was very lengthy and he’s getting stronger by the day. I hope that he produces his best tomorrow. Tomorrow’s game is an important one for him.”

Carlo Ancelotti speaks

Asked if he thinks Real Madrid are having a very good season, the Bayern Munich manager didn’t mince his words. “They are having a very good season,” he said, adding that his team are focussing on their qualities. “We’re focussing on our qualities. I’m not talking about how Real Madrid will set up tactically, I need to think about my own team. It’s a meeting of two top sides who both want to play football.”

Real Madrid team news

Pantomime villain Pepe may have played his last match for Real Madrid, having fractured a couple of ribs in a collision with Toni Kroos during Real’s draw with Atletico Madrid, a match in which he scored, at the weekend. He’s unlikely to play again this season and looks a good bet to leave the club this summer as they’ve shown little indication they’re going to offer him a new contract. Raphael Varane is also unavailable after suffering a hamstring injury in his comeback from injury at the beginning of this month. Expect José Ignacio Fernández Iglesias (Nacho to his mates) to fill in for Pepe.

Bayern Munich team news

The German champions are likely to welcome goalkeeper Manuel Neuer back after he missed their weekend win over Borussia Dortmund with a foot injury but there are conflicting reports about the fitness of Mats Hummels, who injured his ankle in a training session following that game. The smart money seems to suggest he’ll miss out tonight and will face three weeks on the sidelines. In better ankle-knack news for the Bavarian side, Thomas Muller has returned and is ready for action. Striker Robert Lewandowski has been ruled out with a shoulder injury.

Bayern Munich v Real Madrid: déjà vu all over again

One of the greatest rivalries in European football is renewed tonight, when Bayern Munich entertain Real Madrid in the Allianz Arena. Collectively, the two clubs have 16 titles between them and no fixture has been played in European Cup/Champions League competition more often than this one. Today’s game marks their 23rd meeting and Bayern currently lead with 11 wins to Real’s nine. In their most recent meeting, in 2014, Real Madrid smithereened Bayern 9-0 on aggregate en route to their 10th title – La Decima – which was masterminded by no less an avuncular figure than current Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti. Tonight the Italian will be plotting his former team’s demise.
