Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United: Champions League – as it happened

Erik ten Hag: “I am disappointed because we should stay in the game,” says Manchester United’s manager. “When you score three goals at Bayern you should at least take a point. We are in a period where a lot is going against us but we have to make our own luck.”

On Andre Onana: “It’s good he's doing that [acknowledging his mistake] but always when mistakes are being made you have to bounce back as a team. When you score three goals, when one player makes a mistake, it’s gone. We as a team always have to believe we can bounce back.”

Match report: Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United

Group A: a Late brace from Casemiro helped massage the scoreline but not for the first time this season, Manchester United’s soft underbelly was brutally exposed. David Hytner reports from the Allianz Arena …

Andre Onana: “It’s difficult to lose this way,” says Manchester United’s goalkeeper. “After my mistake, we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me because I’m the one who let the team down.

“The team were very good but we didn’t win this game. We have to move forward because this is the life of a footballer. I have to recognise that because of me we didn’t win. I have a lot to prove.”

Harry Kane: “It was a crazy finish but I think for the majority of the game we controlled it,” says the Bayern Munich striker in an interview with TNT Sports. “We dictated the tempo, obviously went 3-1 ahead and then we just lost a bit of concentration in the last five minutes. Thankfully we were able to hold on to the lead but overall it was a really good start to the campaign against a very good side in Man United.”

On his goal: “It’s been nice,” he says. “It’s always good to score but there’s always room for improvement. It was a really good night tonight, we’ve started the season well and now we have another quick turnaround before another home game here at the weekend.”

Andre Onana: United’s Cameroonian goalkeeper will kop a lot of flak for the mistake which led to Bayern Munich’s opener after Manchester United had played quite well for the opening 25 minutes, but it was worth remembering that United’s goalekeper made several good saves to leave his side in with a chance of salvaging an unlikely point in the closing minutes of this massively entertaining and at times chaotic game. There is a lot of blame to go around at Old Trafford for Manchester United’s current woes and not much of it should be levelled at their goalkeeper.

A quick recap: United started well and almost took the lead in the fourth minute, only to concede a quick-fire first-half double to Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry. Sent out early for the second half, United pulled a goal back through Rasmus Hojlund, only for Harry Kane to add Bayern’s third from the penalty spot five minutes later. Coming either side of Mathys Tel’s fine strike, Casemiro’s late brace was not enough to rescue anything for United, who have now lost three games in a row, conceding 10 goals in the process.

Full time: Bayern Munich 4-3 Manchester United

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeeeeeeeep! It’s all over at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern Munich have won by the odd goal in seven, even if the scoreline doesn’t do justice to their almost total dominance throughout the game. Let the latest Manchester United post mortem begin …

GOAL! Bayern Munich 4-3 Man Utd (Casemiro 90+4)

90+4 min: Manchester United win a free-kick wide on the left, just outside the Bayern Munich penalty area. Bruno Fernandes whips the ball goalwards and it goes in off the head of Casemiro from about a yard out.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 4-2 Manchester United (Tel 90+2)

Bayern wrap things up! Just on as a substitute, Mathys Tel cushions a pass from Joshua Kimmich on his thigh and then rifles the ball into the roof of the net from six or seven yards out. Moments before the 18-year-old scored, his fellow sub Thomas Muller had hit the post. The duo came on for Harry Kane and Leroy Sane.

90+1 min: United free-kick, wide on the left and out by the touchline. Fernandes sends the ball into the penalty area, where Upamecano heads clear.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 3-2 Manchester United (Casemiro 88)

United pull a goal back! Sitting on his backside, Casemiro somehow manages to hook the ball home from eight or nine yards out it was scrambled his way by Marcus Rashford. They couldn’t rescue a point, could they?

Updated

86 min: It’s men against boys at the Allianz Arena and one suspects that only compacency could cost Bayern at this late stage. United have conceded three goal for the third consecutive game, a defensive porousness their players and supporters are not accustomed to.

84 min: Rashford gets a cross into the Bayern Munich penalty area, trying to pick out Garnacho at the far post. The ball bounces a little too high for the substitute and he’s unable to steer a shot goalwards.

83 min: Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich pings a clearance to Laimer out by the right touchline and Bayern Munich set off upfield again. The ball finds its way to the feet of Choupo-Moting, whose dipping shot from distance is saved by Onana.

Updated

81 min: Manchester United double-substituion: Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho on for Rasmus Hojlund and Facundo Pellistri. It’s Garnacho’s Champions League debut.

80 min: Leroy Sane plays a weighted pass into the path of Kingsley Coman, who unleashes a fierce drive from a tight-ish angle. Onana saves at his near post.

78 min: Onana flings himself to his right with both arms outstretched to save a Choupo-Moting shot from distance. Good goalkeeping.

76 min: Diogo Dalot slides in with a well-timed tackle to prevent Choupo-Moting pulling the trigger after being teed up just inside the United penalty area.

75 min: Bayern Munich substitution: Jamal Musiala, who has been absolutely terrific, makes way for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.

73 min: Standing out near the left touchline, Bruno Fernandes shapes to receive a sideways pass from one of his central defenders, lets the ball roll over his foot and watches in dismay as it goes out for a throw-in. It’s been that kind of night.

Updated

70 min: Bayern Munich enjoy a long spell of keep-ball, leaving United’s players to chase shadows. They eventually win back possession and Reguilon, who has been one of United’s better players this evening (it’s a low bar), sets off on another rampage of sorts up the left flank. He runs into traffic and his efforts come to nothing.

69 min: Manchester United substitution: Scott McTominay on for Christian Eriksen.

67 min: The stand-out player on the pitch tonight, Jamal Musiala, who is only 20, gallops upfield again and picks out Kingsley Coman wide on the right. He tries to find Goretska with a cross into the United penalty area but the ball is cleared.

64 min: A viciously dipping drive from Leroy Sane almost catches out Onana but the United goalkeeper manages to parry the ball away from danger and out for a corner. He punches the subsequent inswinger clear.

63 min: Bayern Munich substitution: Kingsley Coman on for Serge Gnabry.

62 min: Bayern advance upfield at speed with Musiala on the ball. He plays it wide to Harry Kane, who stings the palms of Onana with a rising drive towards the near post.

58 min: Quite apart from being extremely harsh on Christian Eriksen, the penalty awarded to Bayern Munich took a while coming. Initially, it looked like both the ref and his VAR officials had decided not to give it, then Glenn Nyberg was told to adjourn to his pitchside monitor to have a look at some replays.

Despite Eriksen’s very close proximity to Upamecano (not Goretska, as I previously said) and despite his arm not being in a particularly “unnatural” position, he was deemed to have handled the ball and the spot-kick was awarded.

57 min: Leroy Sane smacks a low diagonal shot off the foot of the far post after excellent work by Musiala, who is causing Manchester United’s defence all sorts of problems and played a weighted ball into his teammates path on this occasion.

55 min: Going back to that United goal, Hojlund opened his United account with a low shot that was teed up by Marcus Rashford and took a big deflection on its way past Sven Ulreich.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United (Kane 53pen)

Kane scores! The England skipper sends an unstoppable spot-kick curling into the side-netting.

Penalty for Bayern Munich!

That is very, very harsh. Eriksen was standing so close to Goretska there was nothing he could do to stop the ball hitting his arm.

51 min: Bayern go close with a shot on goal blocked by Diogo Dalot, before Leon Goretska has a header hit the outstretched arm of Christian Eriksen in the Manchester United penalty area. The ref is going to his pitchside monitor to have a look.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 2-1 Manchester United (Hojlund 48)

United pull a goal back. It’s not pretty, but Rasmus Hojlund’s deflected shot from 12 yards marks his first goal for Manchester United and gets them back into the game.

48 min: Casemiro plays a quick ball forward for Fernandes to chase through the right side of the Bayern penalty area. A Manchester United target dsuring the summer, Kim Min-Jae gets across to head the ball out of his path.

47 min: Rasmus Hojlund wins a throw-in deep in Bayern Munich territory, down by the corner flag. It’s taken, United lose possession and Bayern win a throw-in in much the same place.

Second half: Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester United

46 min: Play resumes, with Manchester United having been sent out for the second half about five minutes before their hosts. There are no changes in personnel on either side.

An email: “Why the dig at Harry Maguire in the 41st minute?” asks Jason. “I thought he was injured and unavailable tonight?”

I was actually referring to the man named Harry who is on the pitch, not the one who isn’t. Mr Kane has an assist to his name, having teed up Leroy Sane for Bayern’s opener, but I’m fairly confident it is written in the gods that he will get on the score-sheet.

Half-time: Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester United

Peep! Referee Glenn Nyberg draws the first half to a close, with Manchester United trailing 2-0 despite getting off to a good start. A howler from Andre Onana gifted Bayern an opener scored by Leroy Sane, while some brilliant build-up play from Jamal Musiala led to their second from Serge Gnabry. United have a mountain to climb if they are to avoid losing their third game in a row.

45 min: Goretska picks out Sane in acres of space on the right flank with a pass from midfield. He cuts inside on his left foot and sends a curled effort narrowly wide of Onana’s far post. Close, but no cigar on this occasion.

43 min: Bayern Munich continue to turn the screw, piling the pressure on United. Bruno Fernandes gives his side some much-needed respite, intercepting a Leon Goretska pass and playing the ball upfield.

42 min: Marcus Rashford chases a long ball towards the byline but Dayot Upamecano is able to match him for speed and shepherd the ball out of play for a goal-kick. Rashford shakes his head in frustration.

41 min: Having started so well, Manchester United find themselves two quick-fire goals down as we approach half-toime. Gnabry tries to play Musiala through on goal but his pass is intercepted. United are on the ropes and Harry hasn’t even scored yet.

37 min: Rasmus Hojlund gets a half chance, leaping to get on the end of a Diogo Dalot cross from the left. The delivery is a little to high for him and he’s unable to steer his header on goal.

Updated

35 min: Manchester United win a free-kick wide on the right and Lindelof and Martinez make their way into the Bayern penalty area. They shouldn’t have bothered, as Fernandes’ delivery sails over the heads of both men and is cleared by the head of Upamecano.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 2-0 Manchester United (Gnabry 31)

Oof! Brilliant play from Jamal Musiala, who accelerates down the inside-left, taking on and beating Diogo Dalot, before turning to tee up Serge Gnabry with a pull-back. Bayern’s No7 made no mistake, spanking the ball past Onana, who couldn’t do much about that one.

30 min: You know what you’re going to get from Andre Onana and occasional ricks are all part of the package. If he was wearing a hat, he could have thrown it on that soft, low effort from Sane but he somehow managed to let it squirm under his body and past him into the back of the net.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Manchester United (Sane 28)

Bayern lead: Bayern play the ball from side to side of the pitch halfway inside the United half, trying to press and probe for an opening. Upamecano plays the ball wide to Leroy Sane, who cuts inside and plays a one-two with Kane, before shooting from the edge of the area. His low effort somehow creeps under Andre Onana’s body. That’s a howler!

Updated

25 min: Onana plays a long ball forward, trying to pick out Hojlund but fails to find his man. Bayern break upfield in a four-on-four but Sergio Reguilon, who is in the thick of most of the action, puts a stop to their collective gallop.

Updated

23 min: Konrad Laimer goes down halfway inside the United half holding his knee after being tackled by Reguilon but doesn’t get a free-kick for his troubles.

20 min: Harry Kane plays a weighted pass to the byline, and Jamal Musiala busts a gut to reach it and try to get a cross in. Victor Lindelof anticipated his plan and was across quickly to block. Corner for Bayern, from which they win another. Andre Onana plucks Joshua Kimmich’s inswinging delivery from the sky at his back post.

19 min: Fernandes tries to play Rasmus Hojland in behind the Bayern defence with a low weighted pass but there’s a mite too much welly on the ball and Upamecano shepherds it back to his goalkeeper.

Updated

17 min: United play the ball out from the back, with Andre Onana threading the ball through the narrow gap between two Bayern pressers to pick out Diogo Dalot. He’s so good with his feet.

14 min: Upamecano is penalised for fouling Sergio Reguilon as the United right-back tried to outsprint him down the left flank. Free-kick for United, in line with the edge of the Bayern penalty area. Bruno Fernanders whips the ball into the box, where Harry Kane heads it clear.

13 min: Back on his feet, Reguilon fouls Sane and is penalised. So much for revenge being a dish best served cold …

12 min: There’s a break in play as Sergio Reguilon lies flat on his back trying to catch his breath after a coming-together with Leroy Sane.

11 min: Manchester United have started well and should be ahead. Bayern are taking a while to settle into the game and get a foothold. They’ve given the ball away cheaply on a number of occasions in the middle third of the pitch.

9 min: Manchester United win a corner, which Eriksen takes short to Marcus Rashford. The ball is swung into the Bayern penalty area and Ulreich punches clear at the far post.

7 min: Dayot Upamecano and Konrad Leimar combine to send Leroy Sane cantering upfield through the inside right between full-back and centre-back. He’s penalised for offside.

4 min: Christian Eriksen brings a terrific save out of Bayern goakeeper Sven Ulreich at the near post after the ball ricocheted his way when Alphonso Davies poked the ball off Facundo Pellistri’s toe, sending it the Dane’s way. United should have scored! Pellistri looked to have a tap-in but Davies did superbly to prevent him getting a shot off from close range.

3 min: Bayern win an early corner which is pinged towards the near post. Manchester United clear.

1 min: The players of Bayern Munich are wearing white shirts, with red shorts and socks, while their visitors are wearing their green and white striped away shirt, black shorts and socks.

“The new away kit draws inspiration from the club’s early away strips, introducing a fresh interpretation of the classic green colour,” it says here. “Maroon-red lines punctuate white blocks, reminiscent of the city’s distinctive red bricks and architecture. The night-green base represents the urban landscape that Manchester is renowned for, providing a perfect canvas for the bold, vibrant design. Completing the silhouette is a stylish white ribbed crew-neck collar.”

Bayern Munich v Manchester United is go ...

1 min: Following a moment’s silence for the victims of the recent natural disasters in Morocco and Libya that was interrupted by a couple of braying idiots, Bayern Munich get the ball rolling. Game on!

Not long now: Both sets of players make their way out on to the Allianz Arena pitch, while in the stands, 71,000 Bayern Munich fans are joined by 4,000 visiting United supporters. The teams line up either side of referee Glenn Nyberg and his team of match officials, their game faces on as they listen to the Champions League anthem. Kick-off is just a couple of minutes away.

Elsewhere in Group A: It’s finished all square between Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen in Istanbul. Having gone 2-0 down to their visitors, the Turkish champions scored in the 86th and 88th minutes to earn themselves a point.

An email: “Ten Hag is facing Bayern with a bench that contains only Jonny Evans as a backup defender, but three goalkeepers?” writes Tim Davies. “For crying out loud.”

Thomas Tuchel: “Jamal is a key player for us with his ability to turn in half-spaces, then speed up and accelerate the game,” says the Bayern manager in an interview with TNT Sports, upon being asked why he picked Jamal Musiala ahead of Thomas Muller. “I expect deeper ball posssession in our half and in the middle of the pitch, and hopefully we find spacxes to start fast attacks from possession. That would be ideal for Jamal. He’s a good mix with Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies on the side and he has our trust.”

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag makes just one change to the lin-up that started against Brighton on Saturday, dropping Scott McTominay to the bench and bringing in Facundo Pellistri, who starts for just the second time in a Manchester United shirt. Signed from Penarol in Uruguay in 2020, the 21-year-old has made 13 appearances for United but spent last season on loan at Spanish club Alaves.

Bayern Munich: Harry Kane starts up front for Bayern Munich, while Joshua Kimmich has been passed fit to play in midfield. Thomas Tuchel, who is suspended for tonight’s game after being banished from the touchline in last season’s quarter-final against Manchester City, makes just change to the side that started Friday’s match against Bayer Leverkusen. Jamal Musiala comes in for Thomas Muller, who has to make do with a place on the bench.

Bayern Munich: Harry Kane has suggested that he and his teammates can exploit the turmoil around Manchester United when they face them in the opening round of the Champions League group stage ties. David Hytner reports from Munich …

Early team news

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is expected to be out for a few weeks with a hamstring strain, joining his fellow full-back Luke Shaw in the Manchester United treatment room, where Tyrell Malacia, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Sofyan Amrabat, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo have also been keeping the physios busy.

Varane and Mount are both back training but tonight’s matcxh looks to have come to soon for them. Jadon Sancho remains exiled from the first-team squad after a recent act of insubordination on social media, while Antony is on a well-documented leave of absence.

Manuel Neuer, Raphael Guerreiro and Tarek Buchmann are all injured and have yet to feature for Bayern Munich this season, while midfielder Joshua Kimmich is a doubt for tonight’s game as he’s suffering from a tendon injury.

Group A: Bayern Munich v Manchester United

The Allianz Arena is the venue for tonight’s mouthwatering clash between Bayern Munich and Manchester United, two behemoths who have triumphed in the European Cup a total of nine times between them.

Having won three and drawn one of their opening four games of the Bundesliga season, Bayern go into this game in considerably better nick than a United side who have lost three of their opening five Premier League matches and it’s no surprise the German champions are hot favourites to win tonight’s contest.

With Harry Kane set to make his Champions League debut for Bayern against English opposition, the contest is lent some additional spice and the striker will fancy his chances of adding to his tally of five goals this season against a defence that was run ragged by Brighton last Saturday.

Unbeaten in 34 Champions League group stage matches, Bayern will be hoping to get back to winning ways after being held at home by Bayer Leverkusen last Friday. Kick-off at the Allianz Arena is at 8pm (BST) but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
