Bayern Munich v Celtic: Champions League – as it happened

Goals from Thomas Muller, Joshua Kimmich and Mats Hummels were enough for Bayern Munich to secure an embarrassingly one-sided victory. Celtic were never in the match and they were fortunate that Bayern only scored three. Brendan Rodgers will probably face some criticism after this, though I’m not really sure what he could have done differently. They weren’t good enough to go toe-to-toe with Bayern and they weren’t capable of containing them either, so they simply had to succumb to the inevitable. All of which leaves them in third place in Group B, three points behind Bayern, who are three behind PSG. Thanks for reading. Bye.

Full-time: Bayern Munich 3-0 Celtic

Dembele prises Celtic open with a glorious pass through to Sinclair, who wastes the opportunity to score, taking too long and allowing Hummels to tackle him. Bayern break, Vidal sets up Robben and the winger’s shot is deflected wide. We won’t have time for the corner, though. That’s it. The Russian referee decides Celtic have taken enough of a beating and puts them out of their misery.

90 min+2: From Rafinha’s cross, Muller looks certain to score. But Gordon brilliantly blocks his header with his chest! What a save!

90 min: There will be three added minutes. Rogic heads a corner back across goal and Brown heads against the post from a yard. At least he was offside.

88 min: James Rodriguez dinks a gorgeous pass over the Celtic defence, but the onside Vidal volleys straight at Gordon. In Belgium, meanwhile, Angel Di Maria has made it Anderlecht 0-4 PSG.

86 min: Scott Sinclair deliciously bends a right-footed shot into the far corner from the left. A lovely finish, but the flag’s up for offside. Up the other end, Vidal fires just over.

85 min: Let’s face it, Celtic are playing for third.

82 min: James Forrest makes his first contribution, driving down the right, swerving past Alaba and firing a shot on target. Ulrich punches it behind for a corner.

80 min: Bayern make their final change, Rafinha on for Joshua Kimmich.

78 min: James Rodriguez replaces Kingsley Coman before the corner can be taken. Once that’s done, Hummels heads Robben’s corner just wide. James Forrest replaces Patrick Roberts.

77 min: Lewandowski to Robben. 4-0? No, Lustig and Gordon combine to deny Robben.

74 min: Coman dinks a cross to the far post, but Lewandowski heads straight at Gordon. Celtic attack. Rogic snappily controls a pass from Tierney and releases Sinclair in the area. He’s through, but he can’t beat Ulrich, who gets up smartly to dive to his left and make an excellent save from Rogic’s firm follow-up from 18 yards.

73 min: Vidal finds Robben unmarked on the right of the area. Robben tries to curl it into the far corner, but it’s too close to Gordon who pushes it away.

70 min: Tierney’s swerving shot from 25 yards whistles just wide of the right post.

67 min: Arturo Vidal replaces Thiago.

66 min: PSG are 3-0 up away to Anderlecht. Neymar scored the third.

65 min: Celtic make two changes, Tom Rogic and Moussa Dembele replacing Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths.

62 min: Alaba flashes a cross into the middle from the left. Robert Lewandowski turns it on the volley, but the flag’s up for offside. He wags his finger at the linesman, but he was just off. The stadium announcer hasn’t realised, though. The goal music keeps blaring, even as Lewandowski continues to chunter at the officials, and the man with the mic proceeds to hail the fourth Bayern goal, much to the amusement of the Celtic fans.

61 min: Another corner for Bayern. Arjen Carroll’s glancing header has to be cleared off the line by Gamboa.

60 min: Sinclair tees up Ntcham on the edge of the area. He leans back as he shoots. The ball’s just knocked a table of steins flying in the city centre.

59 min: Gordon punches Muller’s cross away.

59 min: Robben plays a one-two with Thiago and darts down the right, but Gordon claims his low cross.

56 min: The pressure is relentless and unforgiving. Celtic are gasping. They can barely get out of their third.

55 min: Lewandowski sends his second free-kick of the night into the wall. I suspect he’ll have to make way for someone else next time.

54 min: Ntcham fouls Thiago in a central position 25 yards from goal.

53 min: Sinclair knocks a pass down the line. It isn’t very good, but Tierney bustles on to it, showing good persistence, cuts back from the byline and tries to squeeze a shot past Ulrich, who gathers it at the second attempt.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 3-0 Celtic (Hummels, 51 min)

Robben swings the corner into the area from the right and Hummels peels away from Boyata, rises above Brown and sees his header drift into the far corner. So easy.

51 min: Gordon plays Brown into trouble with a poor pass. Brown isn’t good enough enough to deal with the pressure. Bayern can’t take advantage, though, Robben’s shot deflected over. But...

49 min: Robben falls over on the edge of the Celtic area and demands a free-kick. I want doesn’t get.

47 min: The ball reaches Roberts on the edge of the area. He drops a shoulder, dips inside and tries to Robben a shot into the far corner. His shot goes a yard or two over. That was Celtic’s first shot.

46 min: Celtic get the second half underway.

Half-time: Bayern Munich 2-0 Celtic

Bayern are cruising. They lead thanks to goals from Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich and the truth is that the scoreline could be so much worse. This isn’t a fair fight. It barely resembles a serious contest. Celtic have been hopelessly out of their depth.

Updated

42 min: Celtic try to break on the left. Arjen Robben races back and halts Sinclair with a perfect slide tackle. He’s 33!

39 min: Roberts overruns the ball and clatters into Thiago. He’s booked. He looks frustrated.

37 min: Celtic attack! But Armstrong has his pocket pinched by Rudy just as he’s about to shoot.

34 min: Lewandowski clips a free-kick into the wall from the edge of the area.

33 min: Muller’s goal was his 40th in the Champions League. He’s also scored in every season he’s played in the competition. Ten years running. Not bad.

31 min: Gamboa is being left one-on-one with Coman far too much. It’s clear he can’t cope. Roberts has to give him better protection.

30 min: Here come Bayern again, Lewandowski determined to get on the scoresheet. He makes space for a shot from 18 yards; Gordon beats it away.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 2-0 Celtic (Kimmich, 29 min)

But Celtic’s attempts to frustrate don’t end well either. The ball just keeps coming back at them and it’s not long before Bayern double their lead. Coman, who’s having a lot of fun against Gamboa, tears past poor old Gamboa and chips a cross to the far post. They’re queuing up. Celtic are utterly bewildered. No one’s marking Kimmich, who has ample time to send a header into the far corner, Gordon rooted to the spot.

28 min: It looks like Celtic are consciously trying to tighten up. They haven’t been as ambitious since the goal. You suspect they’ve realised their initial bold approach was slightly misguided.

26 min: The pace has dipped a little. Alaba swings in a cross from the left. Lewandowski leaps and glances well wide.

24 min: Coman shoots straight at Gordon from 25 yards.

22 min: A Bayern corner on the right. Kimmich pulls it back low to the unmarked Lewandowski, who rams the bouncing ball over.

21 min: Bayern canter forward at speed, Celtic’s midfield panting and wheezing. Robben slips a pass through to Muller, whose cross flashes across the face of goal.

20 min: A bit better from Celtic, Sinclair tricking past Kimmich on the left, but his cross is cleared.

GOAL! Bayern Munich 1-0 Celtic (Muller, 17 min)

This is insultingly simple. Kimmich cuts in from the right, on to his left foot, and lofts a cross into the middle. The Celtic defenders just stand around, watching slack-jawed. Gamboa plays Lewandowski onside. He has the freedom of the area, time to make up his mind. He flexes the neck muscles and thuds a header towards the bottom left corner. Gordon claws it out, so Muller smashes the rebound into the roof of the net. This could get ugly.

16 min: Gamboa does better this time, sticking tight to the dangerous Coman and conceding a corner. The corner’s cleared and Celtic break. They have space when they venture forward. Patrick Roberts embarks on a great run down the right, surging into the area before seeing his shot blocked.

14 min: Coman beats Gamboa with embarrassing ease down the outside on the left. His cross is only cleared as far as Alaba by Lustig, who’s relieved to see the left-back wastefully blaze over from close range. Another escape.

13 min: Celtic are far too open. They’re giving Bayern way too much space. They’re asking for it. Lewandowski causes more problems as Lustig backs away from him. He turns and slips Coman in on the left. He wants too long, however, and Roberts, tracking back diligently, robs him. The ball comes to Muller, who tees up Kimmich for a shot that’s sliced miles wide.

12 min: Celtic mount a counterattack, Armstrong skipping away from Rudy and finding Griffiths on the right. He’s tackled, but the ball breaks to Sinclair on the edge of the area. He can’t take it in his stride, though.

10 min: Celtic lost 7-0 away to Barcelona a year ago. If they don’t sharpen up at the back, they could be in for a hiding tonight too. They’ve survived the first 10 minutes, but only thanks to some extremely generous refereeing.

9 min: Kimmich crosses from the right. Boyata heads away before it reaches Lewandowksi.

7 min: Celtic get away with another one. Lewandowski breaks into the same portion of space again and this time Lustig clearly pulls the striker’s shirt, causing him to go down in search of a penalty. His appeals are waved away, though. Lewandowski is unsurprisingly incandescent. That was blatant. What are the officials playing at? And while we’re at it, Celtic’s makeshift back four is already looking very vulnerable.

6 min: A long pass over the top, down the right channel, finds Lewandowski. He’s all alone. He takes it in his stride, holds off Lustig and then manages to pull the ball back from the right byline. The cutback reaches Thiago at the far post and he smashes it high past the exposed Gordon. The goal’s disallowed, though, because the official behind the goal reckoned that the ball went out before Lewandowski crossed it. Replays suggest that Celtic have got away with one.

3 min: Anderlecht 0-1 PSG. Kylian Mbappe.

2 min: A bright, open start. It’s Celtic’s turn to attack and Sinclair, trying to skitter into the Bayern area, wins a corner on the left. Griffiths sends it deep to the far post. Thiago flicks it away. “Have you even eaten?” says Katie Semple. “I mean, four hours on the select committee live blog and now a MBM? I hope someone went and got you din dins at least.”

I ate. Burrito.

Peep! We’re off! Bayern, all in red, get the game underway. They’re kicking from right to left in the first half. They’re on the front foot straight away, Alaba and Coman combining down the left, the latter wriggling into the area and winning a corner. Kimmich curls it to the far post and Celtic clear with some difficulty.

The teams are out. Time for the Champions League anthem. There’s a great atmosphere inside the Allianz Arena, with the Celtic fans giving their heroes tremendous backing.

This, of course, is Jupp Heynckes’s first match in charge in Europe since Bayern Munich beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final in 2013. Heynckes, of course, is only back at Bayern after the board decided to sack Carlo Ancelotti following the hammering at PSG a couple of weeks ago. Celtic know what that’s like, though there was no question of Brendan Rodgers losing his job after his team received a lesson from Neymar and co in their opening match.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that Bayern are there for the taking, mind you. Just look at that team! They’re level on three points with Celtic, but the Germans are still massive favourites at the Allianz Arena this evening. That said, Celtic are full of positivity after the win at Anderlecht. Rodgers wants his improving team to be brave and bold. His starting 11 is positive.
