Bayern Munich to make training return 'in small groups' on Monday

Bayern Munich players will return to training on Monday, the Bundesliga champions have confirmed.

In a statement, Bayern announced that their players would resume activities at Sabener Strasse in small groups "in coordination with government policy and the relevant authorities".

The German Football League (DFL) had originally recommended that clubs should stop training until April 5.

"It goes without saying that all hygiene regulations will be strictly observed," Bayern said.

Bayern additionally confirmed that training would take place without the public present and urged fans to "follow the instructions of the authorities" and not try to attend.

It will be the first time that Bayern have trained since the coronavirus pandemic brought a halt to their latest title bid.

The last round of Bundesliga matches took place between 6-8 March, with Borussia Monchengladbach then facing Cologne on March 11.

The following batch of games were initially scheduled to be played behind closed doors before a suspension officially began, though that postponement was eventually brought forward.

The Bundesliga and second-tier 2.Bundesliga were initially suspended until April 2, but that was later extended through to at least April 30 due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Bayern currently sit top of the Bundesliga as they pursue an eighth successive domestic title, four points clear of closest challengers Borussia Dortmund.

They are also through to the German Cup semi-finals and hold a 3-0 first-leg advantage over Chelsea in the last 16 of the Champions League.
