NEW DELHI: Bayern Munich secured a 4-3 victory over a beleaguered Manchester United as they commenced their Champions League Group A campaign on Wednesday.
The match saw Bayern Munich swiftly establish their dominance with two goals in the first half, courtesy of Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry, finding the net in the 28th and 32nd minutes, respectively. These goals put the hosts firmly in control, leaving a beleaguered and injury-hit Manchester United scrambling to respond.
United managed to pull one back in the 49th minute, thanks to Rasmus Hojlund's deflected effort. However, their hopes of a comeback were dashed just four minutes later when Harry Kane converted a penalty for Bayern, awarded following a handball by Christian Eriksen. The goal restored the German side's two-goal lead.
Despite their struggles, United showed resilience with a late strike from Casemiro in the 88th minute, keeping their hopes alive. But Bayern Munich substitute Mathys Tel added another goal for the hosts during stoppage time, securing their victory.
Casemiro managed to head in one more for United with the last move of the game, but it was not enough to alter the outcome.
Bayern Munich, currently boasting an impressive record of being unbeaten in their last 28 Champions League group stage home matches, hit the woodwork twice through the strikes of Sané and Thomas Mueller from in the second half.
