Bayern Munich starlet Ryan Johansson committed to Ireland says family

Ryan Johansson's family insist the Bayern Munich starlet remains committed to playing for Ireland.

The FAI are in talks with FIFA to try and determine if there is a technical loophole in the eligibility rules.

Johansson has played at Under-19 level for Ireland and also for Luxembourg’s Under-21s.  He is also eligible for Sweden.

And speaking to a Swedish newspaper, Johansson said Luxembourg believe he cannot transfer to Ireland.

They argue that he cannot switch as he did not have an Irish passport at the time he played for them.

Johansson - who played for Bayern in a pre-season clash with Tottenham last week - said: “I know the Irish association is trying to resolve the situation.

“At the same time Sweden is very interested. We'll see what happens in the next few months.”

Johannson has a Swedish father and English mother but his maternal grandparents were from Co Clare and Co Westmeath.

And his mother has reiterated her son’s desire to play for Ireland, insisting his intentions are not in doubt.
