Bayern Munich spearhead UEFA salary cap proposal that could help level Champions League playing field

Bayern Munich are preparing to submit a joint proposal with the German FA on introducing salary caps in UEFA member competitions.

The proposal could bring about a more level playing field across Europe as Bundesliga clubs struggle to keep pace with growing player wages and transfer fees.

Fritz Keller, president of the German FA (DFB) has held talks with Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and the cooperation has led to a proposal penned to European football's governing body.

Keller said: "There are absurd salaries and transfer fees that are no longer credible.

"We have to talk about salary caps. I am glad that I agree with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on this point.

"Therefore, we will write a letter to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin."

The proposals could lead to a more even keel across European football which would be good news to Scottish clubs such as Celtic and Rangers in European competition.

And in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, the potential new measures could provide stability in a player market that looks like being anything but in the months ahead.

Figures released by the CIES Football Observatory last month predicted a staggering 28 per cent drop in transfer fees across the big five European leagues as a result of the crisis.

And Bayern president Herbert Hainer predicted a sharp drop in transfer fees from this summer.

He said in April: "Although serious predictions are difficult to make, it's obvious there'll be changes. That's just logical.

"When income decreases, there's less money in circulation. And given the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis on people's everyday lives, outrageous sums in the millions are even less justifiable than they already were."
