Bayern Munich rule out Arsene Wenger as Niko Kovac's replacement

Arsene Wenger will not be making a sensational return to management to steady the ship at Bayern Munich, despite the Frenchman making contact with the Bavarian giants.

The former Arsenal manager had been installed as the bookies favourite to land the position after the Bundesliga champions parted ways with Niko Kovac after last weekend's surprise 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Wenger , who has been out of management since leaving Arsenal at the end of the 2017/18 season, was quickly identified by many as the prime candidate to steady the ship.

However, a Bayern source has told German outlet Bild that, despite Wenger making contact with a club chief, he has been told he is not an option for the club.

"Arsene Wenger called Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Wednesday afternoon and signalled interest in the coaching post," the source stated.

"Bayern appreciate Arsene Wenger very much for his work as a coach at Arsenal, but he is not an option as a coach at FC Bayern Munich."

That news will come as a blow to many Arsenal fans, who had been publicly expressing their desire to see the club legend return to management and felt that Bayern was the perfect opportunity for him.

Hansi Flick, who guided Bayern to victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League yesterday as caretaker boss, is now seen as the most likely figure to take the reigns.

However, former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is still out of management and has the experience at a top-level club to be an immediate success, while former Bayern youth coach Erik Ten Hag continues to be linked with the position.

Ten Hag has earned plaudits from across the continent for his stellar work with Eredivisie champions Ajax, guiding the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League last term.
