Bayern Munich make Kingsley Coman statement amid Liverpool transfer rumours

Liverpool have been dealt a transfer blow in their pursuit of Kingsley Coman after Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn's claims.

Kahn says he is 'optimistic' about keeping Coman at the Bundesliga club after talks began to convince the winger to pen new terms.

The World Cup winner has scored 41 goals and provided 50 assists in 200 games for Bayern and won an astonishing ten league titles during his spells at Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and the Bavarian giants.

The winger has a contract until 2023 at the Allianz Arena but the German champions are keen to tie him down to an extension.

Kahn, who has recently taken up his role as Bayern's CEO, is looking to retain the club's top players and discussions are underway with both Coman and Leon Goretzka to commit their future to the Allianz Arena long term.

The Bayern chief is confident both players will want to stay with the Bundesliga giants due to the club's success but insists they will not be held to ransom.

He said: "We're in talks with Goretzka and Coman. Absolute top players want to be paid accordingly, we're not naive about that. That's perfectly fine. With us, there is a limit, which is very clearly defined.

"With [David] Alaba, you saw that at a certain point, we were no longer willing to go further. We don't push into salary regions that don't suit FC Bayern.

"We are in very, very good talks with both players. I am optimistic. We have a great package to offer here.

"They always have the chance to win big titles with us and can help shape an era."
