Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies compares himself to Manchester United's Luke Shaw

Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies may already have three Bundesliga titles and a Champions League winner’s medal to his name aged just 20 - but he admits he still has a way to go to match up to Luke Shaw.

The Manchester United and England full-back came up in conversation as part of the Canadian international’s latest TikTok stream, with viewers putting forward the names of other players in Davies’ position who are better than him. And if that isn’t the most ‘football in 2021’ paragraph you’re going to read this year, we don’t know what is.

Viewers’ messages were visible on screen to Davies as he spoke directly to camera fielding fan questions, and he was left perplexed by one comment.

A confused Davies asked: “I just saw one that was like ‘Luke Shaw is clear’. What does that mean? Someone explain to me. I never really understood that – clear of what?”

The Bayern man then read out a reply in the chat: “’That means he’s better’.

“Ohhh! Ohh, OK, I get it now, it means he’s better. Yeah, I mean, he is, he’s a really good player!

“Alright, so every time you say like ‘Luke Shaw is clear, Robbo [Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson] is clear, that means he’s better’. OK, makes sense, makes sense.”

Shaw has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance over the past 12 months, playing a key part for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side as they finished second in the Premier League and reached the Europa League final.

That earned him a place in the England squad for Euro 2020 despite fierce competition from Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell.

Shaw capped off a brilliant individual tournament with an unlikely early opener in the final against Italy.
