Bayern Munich issue update on Man City loanee Joao Cancelo's future

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that the Bundesliga giants are yet to decide whether they will turn Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo's loan move into a permanent deal this summer.

The Portuguese international, who will turn 29 later this month, joined the German club on loan for the remainder of the season in the January transfer window. His exit from the Etihad Stadium came as a surprise to almost everybody, with Pep Guardiola saying tactical tweaks were behind the decision.

Cancelo, who can operate as either a right-back or a left-back, has made 19 appearances for Bayern in total so far, scoring one goal and registering six assists. He has made 10 appearances since Thomas Tuchel landed the job and has impressed under his stewardship.

Bayern do have the option to purchase Cancelo at the end of the season for a fee of £61.6million. However, Salihamidzic said talks are yet to have been held between Bayern, City and Cancelo.

"Cancelo is a top player, technically a pleasure for the eyes," said Salihamidzic. "We're glad we have him. We will see after the end of the season... it's too early now. There are no talks yet."

City have developed a system in recent months that has seen natural centre-backs play in the full-back roles and push into central-midfield, such as John Stones and Nathan Ake. That means that Cancelo's days as a City player could be numbered regardless of what Bayern decide to do at the end of his loan spell.

Hailing Cancelo recently, Bayern boss Tuchel said: "I love Joao Cancelo – he has the absolute highest quality, left foot, right foot, passing. I'm more than happy that he's here. We will need him. I'm convinced that he can play at a top level for us."
