Bayern Munich injury crisis worsens as Lucas Hernandez tears ankle ligaments

Bayern Munich have suffered a second major defensive blow in four days.

The German champions are likely to be without first-choice centre-back Niklas Sule for the remainder of the season after he tore cruciate knee ligaments at the weekend.

And Die Roten have now confirmed that club record signing Lucas Hernandez tore ankle ligaments during Tuesday night's Champions League win over Olympiacos in Greece.

"Bayern will be without Lucas Hernandez for the coming period," the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

"He sustained a partial tear of a ligament in his right ankle."

The World Cup winner only joined Bayern from Atletico Madrid in the summer, costing the Bundesliga side a massive £72million as they paid his release clause.

And he has been their best defender in the early part of the campaign.

But now coach Niko Kovac has growing worries in that area, at a time where Bayern have conceded two goals in each of their last five matches.

They have also dropped to third in the Bundesliga after winning just one of their last three league outings.

The club elected to let Mats Hummels leave for Borussia Dortmund before the start of the season, with Hernandez and Sule becoming the No.1 partnership.

The absences of both leaves Jerome Boateng - who the club attempted to get rid of in the summer - with a way back into the first XI.

Boateng, also exiled from the Germany set up, came off the bench in Greece as Hernandez's replacement, where he partnered Benjamin Pavard at the heart of the backline.

Bayern meet Union Berlin in the league this weekend and should have Javi Martinez available, despite the Spaniard - who started in midfield - being taken off at half-time in Piraeus.
