Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller closes on Man City star Kevin De Bruyne's record

Thomas Muller moved a step closer to setting a new Bundesliga record for assists on Saturday - but will miss Bayern Munich's next game.

Kevin De Bruyne holds the record for the highest number of assists in a single season, achieved in the 2014/15 campaign when he managed 21 for Wolfsburg in an astonishing effort that earned him his big-money move to Manchester City.

But that record is under serious threat as Muller and a free-scoring Bayern team continue their march towards yet another German league title. Having fallen behind early on against Bayer Leverkusen, Kingsley Coman saw the defending champions level before Muller notched his 19th and 20th assists to help complete the turnaround.

Bayern would run out 4-1 winners and are now within touching distance of the title with four games to go, with Dortmund hoping to reduce the gap at the top of the table back to seven points when they play later on Saturday.

Muller has four games to assist another two goals and take De Bruyne's record from him, but will be forced to sit out the next game through suspension after picking up a booking in the win over Leverkusen.

De Bruyne is hoping to set a new Premier League record when football returns in the English top flight. City's star playmaker has picked up 16 already and has 10 games left to get the five more he needs to surpass a record currently held by Arsenal great Thierry Henry.
