Bayern Munich deliver Philippe Coutinho confirmation as Arsenal transfer task becomes evident

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Philippe Coutinho will return to Barcelona after his loan spell ended.

The Brazilian international joined Bayern on a season-long loan deal last summer, but the German side did not take up their option to sign the 28-year-old on a permanent basis.

Coutinho played his part as Bayern sealed a famous treble, including scoring against his parent club in a memorable Champions League 8-2 quarter-final win last month.

The former Liverpool star has been widely linked with a return to the Premier League this summer, with Chelsea and Arsenal among the clubs touted as potential destinations.

Gabriel: a transfer worthy of excitement

In a statement on their website, Bayern wrote: "After the treble-winning season, FC Bayern says 'Thank you' and 'Goodbye, take care' to Philippe Coutinho.

"The Brazil international, who joined Bayern on loan from Barcelona last August, returns to the Catalan side following the expiration of his season-long deal.

"Due to the suspension of matches resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the 28-year-old attacking midfielder’s contract at Bayern was extended to cover the end of the Champions League finals tournament in Lisbon."

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also released a statement to pay tribute to the midfielder.

"We would like to thank Philippe Coutinho very much," he said.

"With his creativity and excellent technique, he has invigorated our game during this treble-winning season."

Director Hasan Salihamidzic added: "Even though FC Bayern and Philippe Coutinho are parting ways after just one season, his commitment in Munich has made it clear what an outstanding player he is."

Reports have claimed that new Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman is ready to hand Coutinho a chance to stake his claim for a first team place, but the midfielder's agent Kia Joorabchian has previously stated that he is open to moving to England.

"Because the Champions League will run until August 23, it will be difficult for players like Coutinho to make any commitments or moves pre that date," Joorabchian previously said.

"Because he has the Champions League at the moment, they have to qualify past Chelsea. And then he has got to play Barcelona, believe it or not.

"For him to make a commitment pre having finished the Champions League.

"He loves playing in the Premier League, he is adored playing in the Premier League and that is one of his priorities. He is not at all against staying at Barcelona."
