Bayern Munich confirm Kingsley Coman suffered knee capsule tear during Tottenham Champions League win

Bayern Munich have confirmed winger Kingsley Coman suffered a capsule tear in his left knee during Wednesday night’s Champions League victory over Tottenham.

The Frenchman opened the scoring for the German side in their 3-1 win, finding the net after 14 minutes.

Coman, however, was forced off just over 10 minutes later after jarring his knee when chasing to keep the ball in play.

The 23-year-old was duly substituted, but Bayern’s decision to walk him down the tunnel and not use a stretcher has led to criticism.

“He should not be walking on it. As a player when you hear something, that is one of those ones that could keep you out for a long time,” former midfielder Pat Nevin told the BBC.

Such criticism and scrutiny could now return for Bayern after it was confirmed by the club that Coman is facing an extended spell on the sidelines.

A statement from Bayern Munich said: “The diagnosis from club doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt late on Wednesday night revealed a capsule tear in the left knee.

“Coman also pulled his biceps tendon and jarred the knee joint. The knee will be immobilised for a while with a splint.”

On first viewing Coman’s injury appeared to be an innocuous one as he tried to keep the ball in play, but replays showed how his foot got stuck in the turf and forced his knee to bend the wrong way.

“His injury obviously overshadows the win,” said Bayern Munich caretaker boss Hansi Flick.
