Bayern Munich chief outlines stance on idea that could affect Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has publicly opposed the idea of a European Super League and believes the current crisis presents football with an opportunity to learn from the mistakes of the past.

Football across the continent has been brought to an indefinite halt due to the coronavirus crisis, with the European Championship pushed back to 2021 to allow for domestic campaigns to be extended into the summer months.

That suspension has reignited speculation on the idea of Europe’s big clubs potentially breaking away from UEFA to form a European Super League, something that has been mooted for some time.

If it were to happen, it would potentially have a big impact on the Champions League and Europa League competitions, and the clubs who are regularly involved in them, including the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The most expensive Premier League transfers ever

However, the Bayern chief has made his opposition to the idea clear and believes football should learn from their mistakes when the current crisis comes to a close.

“I’m not in favour (of it). First, because I love football, because I played at the highest possible level. Second, because I know how the public thinks,” he told El Pais.

“Suppose we establish a Super League: there may be more liquidity in the system, but in the end it will be money that will go to the players and the agents.

“The coronavirus can help us create a more rational world, also when it comes to football.

"We must correct the mistakes of the past.”
