Bayern Munich and Germany star Serge Gnabry and the comments that led to Arsenal losing out

Germany winger Serge Gnabry is enjoying a breakout season with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

After a loan spell at Hoffenheim, the club that Arsenal sent Reiss Nelson to play for this season, the 23-year-old became a first team regular at the Alianz Arena in 2018 and has so far made 22 league appearances for the reigning champions.

His impact has left fans of the Gunners questioning how their club missed out on a wide player who has since become a full international for the German national team too.

In 2011, Gnabry moved to England following a youth career in his native Germany. He managed 18 senior appearances in all competitions before signing for Bayern six years later.

Why did Serge Gnabry leave Arsenal? The story of Arsene Wenger's big regret

The wide player was highly rated at the Emirates and was sent on loan to West Bromwich Albion in 2015 to gain experience of the Premeir League before returning to north London to play a role in the first team under Arsene Wenger.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, the move did not go to plan - with comments from former Baggies manager Tony Pulis at the time showing up how things went wrong for Gnabry in England, and ultimately at Arsenal.

He made only one senior appearance for West Brom and the loan spell disrupted his path to Premier League football.

"Serge has come here to play games but he just hasn't been for me, at the moment, at that level to play the games," said Pulis in 2015.

"He's come from academy football and not played much league football."

How Arsenal plan to dominate the loan system after Serge Gnabry and David Ospina failings

It is a similar attitude to the one that saw ex-Manchester City winger Jadon Sancho quit England for the Bundesliga.

He has become one of the stars of German football with Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi is expected to push for a move to Bayern to join Gnabry this summer or in 2020 when his current deal expires.

Both wide players have become England internationals in spite of their struggles for Premier League games, summing up the folly of failing to give talent a chance.
