Bayer Leverkusen suffer Rangers blow as captain Lars Bender emerges as Europa League doubt

Bayer Leverkusen could be without captain Lars Bender for their clash with Rangers next week.

Leverkusen cruised past Union Berlin in the German Cup to reach the semi-final to make it 10 wins from their last 12 games.

But they could be without Germany international Bender for their Europa League trip to Ibrox with his injury worse than first feared.

Bender was expected to miss just their cup game this week, but the club have now announced the injury is worse than they thought.

Leverkusen stated: "Lars is suffering from a fascia tear in the sartorius muscle in his thigh.

"His goal is to be fit and return within a week or so."

Bender will certainly miss tomorrow's game against Eintracht Frankfurt and would be rated a huge doubt for the last 16, first leg clash in Glasgow.

The 30-year-old, who has made 19 appearances for Germany, has played more 300 times for Leverkusen after joining the club from 1860 Munich in 2009.

The right back plays alongside his twin brother Sven, who joined Leverkusen in 2017 after eight years with Borussia Dortmund.
