Bayer Leverkusen director breaks silence on Florian Wirtz amid Manchester United transfer links

Ralf Rangnick is looking to make his mark on Manchester United and the January transfer window is around the corner.

Although any incomings at United will be unlikely without the club completing sales, reports emerged last week claiming that Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz - who is said to be valued at around £60M - is Rangnick's number one transfer target.

The Manchester Evening News understands United's priority is signing a midfielder that can protect the defence - Wirtz is an attacking midfielder and he wouldn't exactly fit that billing, which adds a degree of intrigue to the fresh reports.

Wirtz, 18, has become the heir to Kai Havertz at Bayer Leverkusen after Chelsea brought him to England last summer.

With speculation growing that Wirtz could join United, Bayer Leverkusen's director, Rudi Voller, has commented on the links.

Voller explained that he thinks the youngster will stay in the Bundesliga with Leverkusen.

"Not only because of the contractual situation – also because of the trust we have built in him and his family, we know that he will be in good hands here for a few more years”, Voller told Bild.

“At some point, maybe that day will come and this club will be too small for Florian, similar to Kai [Havertz].

“But that will still take a while. [My] wish is that Florian will stay with us for a few more years.

“That is important for us and for the whole of the Bundesliga and I think it’s his plan too.”
