Bayer Leverkusen chief delivers Kai Havertz update amid Liverpool transfer links

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has opened up on the future of Kai Havertz at the club.

The youngster has been continually linked with a move to Liverpool, while reports also surfaced during January suggesting Manchester United were also interested in the starlet.

But according to a recent report from German media outlet SPORT BILD, the Bundesliga side are expecting a bid from Liverpool for the young midfielder this summer.

And Voller has admitted the club will assess Havertz’s situation in the coming months, insisting he was simply glad to keep the 20-year-old for this season.

“I am glad that we still held [on to Kai Havertz] this year,” Voller said on German TV programme 100% Bundesliga.

“We'll see how it looks in summer. He still has a contract until 2022 - these are, of course, the classic facts.'

“There was already interest in the summer, but we told him that it would be good for him to stay with us for another year. And that was the right decision.”

But Havertz, who has scored five goals and claimed a further two assists in 19 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, was recently urged by Leverkusen legend Michael Ballack to snub any offers he receives this summer and do one final season with his side in order to continue his development.

“He is an exceptional player, but one thing is also clear... Havertz still needs time,' the former Chelsea man told the German media.

“He also needs the robustness to be mentally prepared for Bayern. I also needed my time in Leverkusen back then.

“Havertz must now look closely at his development. We do not need to talk about his footballing qualities because he is a top player.”
