Bay City Roller Les McKeown's music firm owed £850k to creditors

A music company owned by Bay City Roller Les McKeown was worth just over £100,000 when he died.

The star was the creative director for Tangent Management Ltd, which was run from his London home.

The singer was no stranger to financial turmoil, having been involved in more than two decades of legal action for millions of pounds in lost royalties during his time with the band.

But accounts for his company, dated just weeks before Les died in April this year, show it had “retained earnings” of £114,000 – a small sum compared to the huge amounts said to have been made on the back of the Bay City Rollers’ record sales.

According to documents, Les’s company had £981,000 cash in the bank but was left with the smaller sum after more than £850,000 worth of creditors were paid.

Nationwide tributes from the music industry were paid when he died, at age 65, from a suspected heart attack.

He left behind wife Peko Keiko and son Jubei, who has now taken over the running of Tangent Management Ltd.

The Bay City Rollers shot to fame with hits such as Shang-A-Lang and Bye Bye Baby, before splitting in 1978.

Decades of legal wrangling followed against their former record label Arista over millions in missing royalties.

In 2016, Sony reached an out of court settlement with the band after a 10-year wrangle over cash from the 120million records sold.

At one point, the group – which included Eric Faulkner, Stuart Wood and brothers Alan and Derek – was said to be owed more than £70million in unpaid royalties.
