Battling floods, 25% MP still rain-deficit

BHOPAL: What can be more ironical than the fact that many districts in MP are flooded, yet more than one fourth of Madhya Pradesh is rain-deficit when 80 days of monsoon are already over.

The rain-deficit is around 30% or more in 15 places in the state. The number of rain deficit districts have gone up compared to last fortnight. On July 28, 10 districts were rain deficit while the state was 22% surplus. Monsoon in MP is from June 1 to September 30.

State has received 603.1 mm rain so far while normal rain from June to August 10 is 571.4 mm, making a surplus of 6%

Meteorological officials point out that as per the general formula, 20% less or more rainfall is considered normal. But good rainfall is required to fill the gap in places where rain-deficit is more than 20%.

July and August are the months when the state records a good amount of rain.

Rainfall activity reduces sharply in September. There are at least 15 districts in MP where the rain-deficit is more than 20%. These districts include Sidhi, Rewa, Singrauli, Katni, Damoh, Dindori, Alirajpur, Datia, Satna, Umaria, Tikamgarh, Panna, Jhabua, Shahdol and Jabalpur.

Met officials said, existing formations and widespread showers expected in the state are likely to fill the gap in cities short of their rainfall quota so far.
