Battling Broncos still have belief: Haas

Payne Haas insists the Brisbane Broncos feel their team is on the way up despite a 1-3 NRL record. (AAP)

Brisbane prop Payne Haas says belief remains strong that the Broncos aren't far from consistently delivering an 80-minute NRL performance.

The Broncos had hoped to back up a big win over Canterbury against Melbourne on Friday night but were unable to recover from a four-try 11-minute blitz by Storm speedster Ryan Papenhuyzen.

Brisbane started strongly, opening the scoring through Xavier Coates, but were then blown away as they suffered their third loss in four rounds.

"Our first 30 minutes was real good; we just had that 11-minute lapse and it kept on flowing from there," Haas said on Monday.

"We've got to be tougher when it starts getting hard and we face adversity and stay switched on and get those lapses out of our game."

Despite the lack of wins, apart from the lowly Bullldogs, the Test prop said players felt that the team was on the right track.

"I don't think our confidence has been rocked," Haas said.

"I feel like the belief is still there, especially the way we trained today, there was plenty of talk and energy there.

"We've got a good team, we've just got to put it together."

The Broncos next take on premiership favourites South Sydney on Thursday night at Stadium Australia, and will need Haas at his best.

The 21-year-old was suspended for the first three rounds for an off-field incidence but started to repay the team with a stand-out performance in his 69 minutes in Melbourne.

Making 14 runs, Haas was second in his team's run metres behind Coates and made 24 tackles to earn praise from coach Kevin Walters who said he was "outstanding".

"I was a bit relieved," Haas said.

"Watching the boys play the first three weeks was pretty bad and I felt bad on myself so it was good to be back.

"There's still lots to work on so I can't wait to get back out there this week."
