Battle of the student accounts heats up with free £100 cash offer from HSBC

HSBC has released details of its new student account that will pay £100 in cash when you join this year.

The lender said the upfront perk will be open to those starting higher education in September, and will also come with a free one year British Cycling Fan membership, worth £24.

It'll also keep hold of its generous 0% tiered overdraft - which starts at £1,000 in the first year and rises to £3,000 by year three.

The account will be open to new university students as well as those starting an apprenticeship - and will offer access to a 3% paying savings account, too.

HSBC told Mirror Money the student account offer is available now, which means if you've already received a guaranteed offer from a university or apprenticeship scheme, you can start applying.

The bank has long been topping student bank account polls, with Nationwide annually in second place with its 1% interest student account - which also offers a replica overdraft to that of HSBC.

Santander's 123 Student Current Account, meanwhile, offers up to 3% interest on balances between £300 and £2,000 and a three year £1,500 overdraft. Pay in at least £500 a term (meaning if you use it as your main account) and you'll also get a free 16-25 railcard.

If you're looking for upfront perks, Natwest (and RBS) offers one of three rewards when you sign up: a free four year coach card, a one-year Amazon Prime subscription or a four year Tastecard. After your first term, you'll also be able to unlock a £2,000 interest free overdraft.

HSBC is the only cash-payer right now, however both Halifax and Lloyds offer students 15% cashback at selected retailers. Neither pay interest on your balance, however, Halifax does offer access to its 'Help to Save' account which rounds up your spending and automatically invests it in savings.

Fiona McCaffrey, at HSBC said: "We have listened to what students really want when opening a current account. We are giving them the flexibility to decide for themselves what is important to spend it on, whether that is a subscription to a streaming service, purchasing books for the terms ahead, or putting it into the linked high paying Regular Saver account and starting a good savings habit.

"Our £1,000 guaranteed arranged overdraft offer will help those students who might need a little more help and flexibility for their account, and the additional option of a credit card can be a great way to cover unexpected expenses and build a good credit history."
