Battle of the Brits points way for Andy Murray's future in tennis

Battle of the Brits points way for Andy Murray's future in tennis

The next three days at the Battle of the Brits are pivotal in deciding Andy Murray’s plans for the rest of the season and his longer future in the sport.

Murray plays on Tuesday in the event organised by brother Jamie against Liam Broady, his first competitive outing since picking up an injury in November at the Davis Cup.

The former world No1 had been due to play in Miami in March and was weighing up whether to undergo further surgery but is hopeful his hip can hold up to the rigours of three round-robin matches in as many days.

“I’ve been dealing with all the training and stuff I have done up until now very well,” he said. “Playing matches for me is what is important and I’m playing today, Wednesday, Thursday — the players that are playing are at a good level, so that will be a good test for me.

“I want to hold up physically and have my hip good at the end of it, having competed three, four or five matches. I feel like if it doesn’t flare up, having played five matches in six days, that would be a hugely positive thing for me.”

Murray plans to commit to the US Open, fitness permitting, but admitted he held anxieties about the French Open at the end of September.

“I’m not planning on playing any events back to back at any stage in the future,” he said. “But going into the French Open playing no preparation tournament, having not played on clay for I can’t remember how long, I don’t know if my physios would be comfortable for that.”
