Battle of Prestonpans anniversary: Commemoration and miniature display in East Lothian

This Saturday, September 21, will mark the anniversary of the Battle of Prestonpans - a pivotal event in the storied Jacobite rising of 1745.

The battle took place in East Lothian and ended in a stunning victory for Bonnie Prince Charlie and his forces.

Plans are currently being made for a which will inform visitors about the battle, along with a statue of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

The success of the Outlander books and TV series has spurred interest in the Jacobite cause, which sought to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne.

While the new visitor centre won't be ready this year, several events are taking place in East Lothian which history-lovers may be interested in.

Here's what you can expect, along with a brief run-down of what happened in the battle itself.

What was the Battle of Prestonpans?

The "Young Pretender" had already achieved success with the capture of Edinburgh in the days before the battle.

Bonnie Prince Charlie had rallied an army of Highlanders and the Jacobites were determined to press on south into England.

The government tried to put a stop to this with a force led by Sir John Cope, and the two armies faced off in fields near Prestonpans.

The fight itself was over in less than 30 minutes as the government troops were routed by a highland charge.

It was a huge morale boost for the Jacobites, with around 100 casualties they had killed or captures more than 1000.

The victories wouldn't last, of course, and the Jacobites were defeated at Culloden in 1746.

History tour of the battle site

Local history teacher Peter Mackenzie will give visitors a tour around the site at 10am on the Saturday.

This begins at the Jet petrol station in Tranent and goes via Tranent churchyard and the Waggonway.

It's not a walking tour and visitors will need vehicles to get around everything.

Commemoration of the battle

Jacobites and Redcoats from Alan Breck's Regiment, a living history and reeanctment group, will be holding a commemoration on Saturday, the anniversary of the battle.

A wreath will be laid at the 1745 cairn at 11am, followed by a flag-raising at the nearby viewpoint pyramid.

There will be the unveiling of a plaque to Colonel Gardiner afterwards.

You can find out more at the Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust.

Paper armies exhibition

The battle has been recreated in meticulous detail in a new exhibition at the nearby Prestoungrange Gothenburgh building.

Every soldier of every company and regiments is represented as paper miniatures in this new exhibition.

Volunteers made this display, and there will also be vivid paintings from Andy Hillhouse depicting key moments in the battle and the history of the clans and regiments who fought there.
