Battersea constituency results 2019: Labour's Marsha de Cordova wins seat

A defiant tone marked out Labour’s Marsha de Cordova as the Battersea MP lengthened her lead against the Conservatives.

Not wasting a moment in stepping forward to claim her victory in holding the Labour seat against Tory contender Kim Caddy, Ms de Cordova said she plans to “continue to fight Brexit”.

With votes totalling 27,290, the Labour MP - who first won the seat in 2017 - extended her majority from 2,416 two years ago to 5,668.

Campaigning hard on the remain vote in a constituency that voted 77.95 per cent to remain in the EU referendum of 2016, Ms de Cordova impressed constituents.

Highlighting London’s issues of violent crime and food poverty, the Labour MP - who is registered blind - said she is committed to a “more equal country”.

“Every single day of the next parliament I will fight for a more equal country,” said the shadow minister for disabled people.

“For those who voted for Labour and hope, I will not let you down.”

She added: “To those that want me to help the efforts to save our amazing planet, I will. To those who are tired of our young people being hurt in pointless violence and to those bereaved families, I will continue to support you.

“To those living in poverty and using food banks in Battersea, we do not accept it and it has to be that we do not allow that suffering to continue.”

Conservative contender Kim Caddy pulled in 21,622 crosses on the ballot, but failed to win back Battersea, which was held by Tory Jane Ellison from 2010-2017.

The Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Gitsham won 9,150 votes, while the Green Party’s Lois Davis picked up 1,529.

The Brexit Party fielded a candidate, Jake Thomas, who attracted 386 votes.
