'Batman v. Superman' begins filming in Chicago area next week

Oct. 30--The highly anticipated "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is scheduled to film in Chicago and the suburbs Monday through Nov.14, according to Chicago Film Office director Rich Moskal.

The Zack Snyder-directed movie -- which stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman -- has spent nearly six months working in Michigan.

"We head to Chicago after this, then we have a couple more locations," Snyder said Tuesday on the "Stoney and Bill" radio show on 97.1 FM The Ticket in Detroit.

Moskal didn't reveal specific filming locations for the Chicago-area shoot. "Permits haven't been issued yet," Moskal said, via email. "They're still working up a plan."

Snyder filmed the previous Superman movie, "Man of Steel," in Chicago and the suburbs in 2011. The inside of Willis Tower served as the Daily Planet, the newspaper where Superman's alter ego, Clark Kent, landed a job at the end of the film. Western suburb Plano served as Kent's fictional hometown, Smallville, and the Yorkville area served as the sight of Kent's farmhouse.

Plano Mayor Bob Hausler said the movie has not reached out to him about returning to film in Plano, but it appears the cast and crew will return to the Yorkville area. The farmhouse set built for the first movie and then torn down afterward was rebuilt late last year on the same exact plot of land just outside of Yorkville on Route 126.

Director Christopher Nolan filmed part of "Batman Begins" and most of sequel "The Dark Knight" in the Chicago area before moving the franchise to Pittsburgh for "The Dark Knight Rises." "Batman v. Superman" -- scheduled to hit theaters March 25, 2016 -- will not be a continuation of that Batman storyline, but instead a reboot of the iconic character.
