The Batman signal was lit up on many buildings around the world to celebrate the 80th anniversary of DC Comics superhero.

According to the German news agency, photos of the iconic signal shown on buildings and landmarks in Melbourne, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Berlin, and New York and many other cities went viral online.

Batman's official page on Twitter wrote: "Kick back, old chum… you've earned it."

In a statement on its website, DC Comics said it cooperated with thousands of comic book retailers, book stores and libraries around the world to celebrate the anniversary.

Since his first appearance in the "Detective Comics" book in 1939, Batman has become one of the most famous characters in the world.

The character has inspired many movies since the 1960s and until today. Many actors, including Adam West, George Clooney and Christian Bale, have depicted the character on the silver screen.
