'Batman' prowls the streets at night to deliver food to the homeless during coronavirus pandemic

A stranger disguised as Batman prowls the streets of the Chilean capital to deliver food to the homeless.

The capped hero, who did not want to be identified, is providing not only sustenance but light-hearted solace to those in need following months of lockdown in Santiago.

He cooks around 100 food rations a day, which he self-finances, and then prepares the meals for distribution.

He then dresses up as the comic superhero, complete with a coronavirus shielding facemask, and delivers the dinners to people sleeping rough and neighbours in need.

He said the disguise is meant to bring "good cheer and unity" to the community and added: "Batman does not possess superpowers, he uses money and intelligence to help.

“Look around you, see if you can dedicate a little time, a little food, a little shelter, a word sometimes of encouragement to those who need it."

While his outfit has entertained people in the city, it has also been gratefully received by people on the street.

Simon Salvador, one of the recipients, said the true sentiment of the gesture was clear.

“It is appreciated...from one human to another," he said.

His good deeds come at a time when restrictions, aimed at stemming the spread of Covid-19, have devastated Chile’s economy and unemployment has skyrocketed to over 12 per cent breaking a decade-long record.
