The 12 Bathroom Color Ideas Designers Are All Turning to This Year for a Calmer, Warmer Space

A sophisticated bathroom with muted green wall panelling, off-white walls, a marble double vanity with brass fixtures, an enclosed shower with an arched doorway, and a freestanding bath. .

Choosing a color scheme for a bathroom in 2026 goes far beyond a palette of neutrals; designers are proving that these functional rooms present an opportunity to embrace joy-bringing color, just as you would in larger living spaces.

From space-limited powder rooms that can afford a truly bold take on color, to larger, light-flooded bathrooms that lend themselves to a palette of soft and soothing shades, the right color palette can totally transform this room, taking it from purely functional to one that oozes design flair.

Here, interior designers discuss the bathroom color ideas they're favoring this year, to give you some inspiration for your own space, whether you're looking for something bold and impactful or calm and restorative.

1. Earth Tones and Warm Wood

Earthy colors are continuing in popularity in 2026, but rather than muted tones of years gone by, designers are favoring those that bring warmth and depth with the earthy vibrancy color trend. From serene shades of teal to terracotta, these colors feel closely linked to the natural world, while they pair wonderfully with warm wood tones.

This space proves that you don't always need to turn to bathroom paint ideas: its color palette is comprised of the blue-green wall tiles, warm brown flooring, and the wood-clad walls and cabinetry. 'There’s no paint used in this bathroom,' says the interior designer Jessica Helgerson, based between Portland and Paris. 'The only materials are wood and tile. The golden woods – douglas fir on the walls and white oak on the cabinetry – create a warm hug, while the turquoise tones in the tile offer a cool counterpoint and keep the space feeling dynamic and interesting.'

2. Dusky Plaster Pinks and Crisp Neutrals

Pink bathrooms have been making a comeback lately, but not as you once knew them. Instead of the saturated bubblegum pinks and delicate pastels, designers are reimagining pink with moody, grounding hues that put a refined spin on this bathroom color trend.

Here, Jessica Helgerson opted for Farrow & Ball's Dead Salmon on the walls, an earthy pink paint that leans towards taupe in some lights. To keep the space feeling modern, crisp neutral tones of black and white make up the rest of the color scheme, from the marble wall to the statement vanity unit. 'The high contrast palette in this room; ebonized wood and primarily white marble are softened and warmed up by the soothing warmth of the paint,' says Jessica.

When choosing bathroom color ideas, don't think of this room in isolation; consider your whole house color palette, suggests Jessica: 'As in all our projects, the palette in this room is part of a whole that repeats throughout the house; it is reflected in different ways in different spaces, giving the entirety of the project a feeling of continuity and cohesion.'

3. Aged White and Muted Greens

Bathroom colors can risk feeling stark when lots of bright white is used, especially since fittings often account for a large amount of the room's palette. To soften the look and give the space a more lived-in look, consider going for off-white paints that appear as soft neutrals rather than bright. When pairing this neutral with green paints, go for soft mid-tones that add depth to keep things aligned with 2026 color trends.

Here, Jessica Helgerson teamed Farrow & Ball's Old White with Farrow & Ball's Green Smoke on the paneling. Since both colors share a green undertone, they feel harmonious alongside one another. 'The colors are subtle and soothing and pick up the palette from the adjacent bedroom,' explains Jessica. 'The white in the marble echoes the porcelain bathtub, and all of these colors are introduced again in the mosaic floor, as well as recurring throughout the house as a whole.'

4. Serene Shades of Blue and Delicate Whites

Blue and white bathrooms are endlessly classic, but to bring this coastal-inspired color palette to the present day and prevent it from looking overly themed or predictable, go for muted, pale blue paints with a grounding dose of gray in them. These types of blues have seen plenty of appeal this year, creating a sense of calm while feeling more effortless than saturated tones.

'Pale blue is one of those colors that always feels right in a bathroom,' explains the NYC-based designer Jennifer Hunter, who used Farrow & Ball's Skylight in this small bathroom. 'It has a quiet, calming quality that immediately softens the space.'

To keep the space feeling warm and inviting, go for warm brass fixtures that add balance. 'I love how it pairs with brass hardware, adding a little warmth to a cooler, crisper color,' says Jennifer.

5. Nature-Inspired Greens and Rust Tones

If you're looking for colorful bathroom ideas for 2026, consider fresh and uplifting shades of green that nod to the natural world. From eucalyptus to pistachio, these mid-tones feel more current than once-popular forest green. Here, Benjamin Moore's Maid of the Mist was used on the walls, a green paint with gray tones to keep it livable, along with Benjamin Moore's Audubon Russet on the vanity, a warm terracotta.

'We developed a palette for this home that leans into the playful spirit of its mid-century roots, seeking colors that would feel joyful and warm during snowy winters, yet breezy and cooling in the heat of summer,' explains Heather Menegat, principal designer at Landed Interiors, based between San Francisco Bay and NYC.

Although colorful and slightly playful, this space feels calm thanks to the soothing quality of green.'The soothing tones of this primary bath were selected to encourage moments of quiet pause for our clients, who live a busy life,' says Heather.

6. Dark Inky Blue and Nickel Fixtures

Dark color palettes are a stylish choice this year, especially in lower light or smaller spaces, such as powder rooms, where they set a moody and sophisticated feel. For something statement yet timeless, take inspiration from this space and go for a deep inky blue, which works as a more stylish take on traditional navy blue. When paired with nickel finishes, the space feels cool, contemporary, and slightly formal.

The designer Elizabeth Reich of Baltimore-based Crosby Jenkins explains how this bathroom color scheme was chosen to enhance the original flooring: 'The marble flooring was existing, but the original walls did nothing to enhance the cool grays in the floor. Using the navy and gray wallpaper was a nice complement to tie the two together for a more cohesive look.'

7. Timeless Neutrals and Warm Blush

Sometimes, the best color ideas are those that celebrate the enduring appeal of neutrals, especially in spacious bathrooms that can become a spa-like, calming sanctuary. In 2026, neutrals are as stylish as ever, but it's all about choosing the right tone to avoid a stark and clinical look.

In this neutral bathroom, the blush pink adds warmth to the flooring, while a selection of delicate neutral paints is used across the space. 'We paired the blush tile with Benjamin Moore's Winter Orchard on the walls, which has just enough of a blue-green undertone to keep everything feeling fresh, while White Dove on the trim and Classic Gray on the cabinetry add a bit of contrast without breaking up the softness,' explains the designer Catherine Brooks Giuffre of Houston-based CBG Interiors.

'Farrow & Ball’s Dimpse on the ceiling brings a gentle warmth overhead, giving the whole room a calm, flattering feel that makes it especially nice to spend time in,' she adds.

8. Sunshine Yellow and Muted Blue

Yellow bathrooms can sound like a bold move, but with the right shade, there are few colors as effective at bringing happiness and warmth to these functional spaces. While butter yellow has been the favored shade of recent years, designers are also embracing much richer shades of yellow for modern bathrooms, which feel rich and cocooning. When paired with muted blue, yellow feels livable and balanced thanks to the blend of warm and cool tones.

'In a room this compact, it felt important to really lean into color rather than play it safe, so we introduced a rich, sunshine yellow on the paneling to amplify the sense of light and warmth,' explains the interior designer Laura Stephens. 'The space has very little natural light, and yellow has this wonderful ability to create an almost glowing effect, making the room feel brighter and more inviting. The result is a space that feels joyful, characterful, and full of personality, proving that even the smallest rooms can have a big impact when you embrace color with confidence.'

9. Powder Blue and a Pop of Red

If you're looking for a way to put a modern twist on blue bathrooms, take inspiration from this space that features a pop of red on the vanity. This bold color provides contrast and warmth, while adding something a little more unexpected to feel in keeping with 2026 design trends.

'This is a super dark basement space with very little natural light, so rather than trying to fight that, we decided to really lean into it by creating a fully color-saturated scheme,' says designer Laura Stephens. 'Using Edward Bulmer’s French Blue across the paneling and woodwork gives the room a cocooning, enveloping feel, which works beautifully in a bathroom as it turns what could feel like a compromised space into something atmospheric and considered.'

'We paired this with a striped Ottoline wallpaper to introduce movement and a sense of playfulness, which stops the blue from feeling too heavy or flat,' Laura adds. 'The contrast of the rich blue with the warm, almost terracotta-red vanity adds depth, creating a scheme that feels both bold and balanced.'

10. Serene Turquoise and Chartreuse

This bathroom employs a bold use of color, from the blue-green patterned wallpaper and matching trim to the pop of chartreuse on the tiles. In 2026, in-between colors such as light turquoise seem to be favorites among designers, and this space proves that they work just as well in bathrooms.

'Chartreuse is such a fun, playful, unexpected color – and on the tile, mirroring the palm trees in the paper, it just works,' explains the designer Cecilia Casagrande of Boston-based Casagrande Studio. 'Farrow & Ball's Green Blue on the trim kept everything fresh without competing. The Christopher Farr fabric arrived and pulled it all together – suddenly the whole room felt like spring. Even in a Boston winter, you walk in and forget what month it is.'

11. Soft Neutrals and Muted Accent Colors

If you're inspired to go for a classic neutral color palette in your bathroom this year, consider adding interest and more character with your accent colors. Here, small additions of soft blue, green, and butter yellow quietly elevate the neutral bathroom paint, without taking away from its calming feel. In 2026, as we look to create spaces that restore us, color ideas like this one feel like a winning choice, while also offering timelessness.

'With off-white walls, we wanted to create some interest and decided to paint the wood trim in Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray,' explains the Los Angeles-based interior designer Alex Yeske. 'The blue and green accents were inspired by the nearby lakefront landscape.'

12. Rosy Pink and Warm Brass

Rich and warm shades of rosy pink are another variation of pink bathrooms that designers are loving for 2026. Offering depth and character, these tones work best when used boldly to drench a room, as seen here. 'When our bold clients aren’t afraid of color or commitment, we can’t resist indulging in a little tile-drenching magic for their bathrooms,' explains the designer Joelle Nesen of Portland-based Maison Inc.

'The subtle variations in color and the way the light plays off the glaze give the space a touch of elegance, like stepping into a jewel box,' she adds. 'Going all the way from floor to ceiling not only looks fabulous but also keeps maintenance a breeze, making a big impact with minimal effort. For a flawless finish, always bring in a professional tile setter who knows their way around floor-to-ceiling installation.'

Practical Design Advice for Bathroom Color Ideas

Even though there are endless bathroom color ideas to gain inspiration from, from enduring neutrals to more colorful schemes, it's important to think beyond the colors themselves – the rest of the room's design will affect how they appear.

Bathroom lighting is a key factor to consider, and the wrong lighting can soon throw off even the most stylish color schemes. 'I always try to incorporate a combination of natural light, recessed overhead lighting, and sconces,' explains the New Jersey designer Jessica Hobson.

'When picking the window treatments, try to select something that allows as much of the natural light to filter into the room,' she says. 'I love a semi-sheer cafe curtain in a bathroom: it lets light pour in from the top portion of the window, filters light from the bottom, and of course provides the necessary privacy a bathroom requires.'

When choosing colors for small bathrooms, or those where natural light is limited, designers recommend going for something bold. 'You can lean into the limited light and choose a wild wallpaper or dark, moody paint,' suggests Jessica. 'Since these bathrooms don't need to function like a main bathroom, you can really go for bold colors. I love using saturated jewel tones in these spaces because they really stand out with little natural light.'

If you're feeling inspired to use one of the more trend-led colors, choosing the right application is key to avoiding costly decorating mistakes. 'Painting a room is relatively inexpensive, and the job can be done in a day or two,' says Jessica. 'Tile selection is a significant investment that will last, so I lean toward more neutral choices here that can stand the test of time. Another great, easy way to bring color into a bathroom is with accessories. There are so many fun patterned towels, bathmats, rugs, and shower curtains that can add colorful fun to a bathroom without being permanent and breaking the bank.'

The best bathroom color ideas are those that reflect your personal style and feel aligned with the mood you want to create, whether that's quiet and calm or energizing and joyful. If you're feeling inspired to go for one of the bolder color ideas, you may find they work best in small bathrooms or powder rooms, whereas large family bathrooms work well with soft tones.
