Bathers warned after giant lion's mane jellyfish spotted at Sandycove beach in Dublin

Bathers have been warned after giant jellyfish were spotted on a beach today.

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council has erected warning signs on Sandycove beach in south Dublin after the lion's mane jellyfish were spotted there and further into the bay this afternoon, Dublin Live reports.

Lion's mane are the largest known species of jellyfish and can deliver a sting even when washed up on water.

Symptoms if stung include nausea, vomiting or respiratory distress.

A council spokesman said: "Whilst bathing has not been prohibited, swimmers are advised to be proceed with caution.

"As an added precaution the life guard warning flags are on red and will remain in place till further notice.

"dlr Life Guards are actively keeping a vigilant eye on the water and bathers."
