Bathers advised not to swim at South Dublin Beach due to high bacteria levels

An ‘advice not to swim’ notice has been put in place this evening for Sandycove Beach.

The bathing prohibition notice is expected to last until the 15 th August while resampling takes place.

High bacteria levels were found in a sample taken on 9 th August.

The water quality is suspected to have deteriorated due to impacts from animals or birds.

This notice is not associated with storm overflow.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council tweeted: “Bathing prohibition notice for Sandycove from this evening ‘til 15 th August, due to bacteria levels following water sampling on 9 Aug & consultation w/ @HSELive

“Resampling again & further updates as available

“Not associated with storm overflow.”

To reduce the risk of illness beach users are asked to take the following precautions

  • Avoid swallowing or splashing water
  • Wash your hands before handling food
  • Avoid swimming with an open cut or wound
  • Avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system
