Bath Christmas Market 2020 is cancelled because of coronavirus

Every year thousands of Welsh shoppers make the journey to Bath for the annual Christmas Market that takes over the city centre.

It might still be four months away, but organisers have announced that this year's event won't be going ahead because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Visit Bath, which runs the hugely popular event, said the cancellation decision was made following advice from Public Health England.

Kathryn Davis, chief executive of Visit Bath, said: “It is disappointing that we cannot hold the Christmas Market this year, but I hope everyone will understand the reason for this decision and the early notice we are giving.

"We fully understand the value of the Bath Christmas Market to the city, but public safety and preventing the spread of Covid-19 has to come first.

“We are pro-actively working with partners across the city to create a Christmas event in Bath that will still support our local economy, but in a way that can be adapted as needed and disperses visitors across the city."

The announcement came days after one of  Cardiff's  most well-known and popular Santa experiences won't be going ahead this year.

Pugh's Garden Village in  Radyr  has decided it would be "irresponsible" to hold the Santa event owing to the "sheer volume" of people who visit in "close groups".

Wales health minister Vaughan Gething has said NHS Wales is  planning for a possible resurgence of coronavirus this winter.
