Bath and North East Somerset coronavirus cases have risen by 23 in a few days

An area near Bristol has seen a sharp rise in coronavirus cases over recent days.

Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES) has a total of 394 confirmed cases as of the Public Health England figures from yesterday (August 23).

It means the area saw a surge of 23 cases in the three days from August 20.

This is a far higher increase than B&NES had seen in previous weeks.

It had 343 cases as of July 21 - meaning cases only rose by 28 in the four weeks up to August 20.

The news comes days after some pubs and sports clubhouses in B&NES temporarily shut due to a "local outbreak".

The Dolphin Inn in Welton, the Old Down Inn in Emborough, the clubhouse at Farrington Park Golf Club near Paulton, and Purnell Sports Club in Paulton all closed their doors last week.

Farrington Park said one of its members had tested positive for Covid-19 and Purnell Sports Club said someone who visited had also been confirmed to have the virus.

The Dolphin Inn and the Old Down Inn temporarily shut after learning "several local people" had tested positive.

Bristol Live has approached B&NES Council and Public Health England for comment on what they are doing to combat the spike in cases, and whether cases are likely to keep rising.

The figures from yesterday showed a rise of two cases in Bristol, four in South Gloucestershire and none in North Somerset.

Across the UK, 325,642 people have tested positive for coronavirus, after an increase of 1,041 yesterday.

The latest figures show 41,429 people have died across the UK. Six new deaths were confirmed yesterday.
