Batches of Primula cheese recalled due to fears bacteria could cause fatal food poisoning

If you've bought a tune of Primula cheese recently make sure you check the packaging as it could contain a bacteria which can cause fatal food poisoning.

Primula has issued an urgent product recall over fears that some tubes contain Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria which can cause botulism, a form of food poisoning which can kill.

Gateshead-based Primula says its teams have worked round the clock to confirm which batches of the cheese spread could be contaminated.

All 150g Frimula Cheese tubes, including every flavour variety, which carry a best before date between December 25, 2020 and January 28, 2021 are affected, as are 100g tubes with best before dates between October 30, 2020 and December 10, 2020.

Primula advises customers who have tubes with the above best before dates to not eat the product and return in it to the store they bought it from, for a full refund.

Primula says: "Your safety and wellbeing is our number one priority and therefore, as a precaution, we have stopped all product distribution. We have also instructed retailers to remove Primula tubes from shelves with immediate effect.

"We also advise you not to eat any Primula Cheese tubes you have already purchased, with the above best before dates, but instead to return these to stores in exchange for a full refund.

The Food Standards Agency says: "The issue relates to controlling factors to prevent the growth and toxin production of Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin may cause a serious form of food poisoning called botulism and can be fatal.

"A recall from customers is being carried out as a precautionary measure."
