Bat to blame for blackout at Adelaide maternity hospital

Specialist baby units at the hospital lost power for almost an hour.

A bat is to blame for a blackout that left the specialist baby units at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital without power for almost an hour on Tuesday night.

The incident has sparked a full independent review of the hospital's electrical system.

The bat "interfered" with the SA Power Networks grid at North Adelaide at 9:00pm, according to the hospital's executive director of corporate services, Phil Robinson.

He said that tripped all the unit's circuit breakers, and it took about 50 minutes for an electrician to arrive on site and restore power.

"Our staff are trained for such incidents … they put those plans in place, so patient care was maintained throughout the outage period," said Mr Robinson.

"Yesterday our clinical staff met with all the parents … explained to them what happened, explained that there had been no clinical harm to their babies."

It is the fourth blackout at the Women's and Children's Hospital in just over two years.

Mr Robinson says all four have had different causes.

"There's no common theme, [so] it's appropriate for us to commission a review of all the electrical infrastructure," he said.

"We need an independent expert to come in, review the whole site, and give us advice as to what would be appropriate in terms of anything we can do to improve the resilience of our electrical system."

In July, a blackout occurred in the Rogerson Building, which houses the 24-hour children's and maternity operating theatres.

In October last year, an outage in North Adelaide left parts of the hospital in the dark, forcing the cancellation of some surgeries.

In July 2018 a 30-minute blackout prompted the postponement of surgeries and diversion of ambulances to other hospitals.
