Bastian Schweinsteiger slams Manchester United's first half approach vs Man City

Former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger hit out at Manchester United's first half performance in the Manchester derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime.

United found themselves 2-0 down at half time, courtesy of an own-goal from Eric Bailly and a close-range finish from Bernardo Silva, who pounced on some woeful Reds defending.

City were in control right from minute one and enjoyed plenty of possession in United's half, creating a wave of opportunities, which would have been converted had it not been for Spaniard David de Gea between the sticks, who kept the scoreline down.

Moments before City doubled their advantage through Bernardo, former United man Schweinsteiger took to Twitter to criticise United's approach, urging the Reds to become more "active."

Writing on Twitter, the former Germany international said: "Passive @ManUtd vs active @ManCity. The idea of football couldn’t be more different. I wish United would be more active and not chasing the ball non stop - losing their energy. Take away the ball of Pep‘s team. Come on Utd, you’re playing at #OldTrafford!"

Schweinsteiger was spot on with his first half assessment. United were out-classed by City in every department and rarely offered any threat to trouble Ederson in the City goal, with only Cristiano Ronaldo forcing a save out of the Brazilian.

Having gone in front inside the opening ten minutes, City threatened to repeat the onslaught Liverpool inflicted on United less than two weeks ago, with only their lack of a killer touch in the final third stopping them.

United made a change at half time, bringing on Jadon Sancho to replace Bailly, in the hope of sparking a comeback.
