Bastian Schweinsteiger sends heartfelt message to Manchester United ahead of Europa League final

Bastian Schweinsteiger has sent a heartfelt message of support to Manchester United ahead of the Europa League final against Villarreal.

The German World Cup winner spent 18 months at Old Trafford, joining on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in 2016 and leaving to join MLS franchise Chicago Fire in February 2017.

His exit came two months prior to United' s victory against Ajax in the Europa League final, during the reign of Jose Mourinho, but he made a lasting impression upon the fans.

The 36-year-old clearly remembers his time in England fondly, issuing a message of support ahead of tonight's showcase final.

"Dear Man Utd and fans, today is a good day to win the Europa League again," he tweeted.

"I'll keep my fingers crossed and wish you all the best! Crossed fingers. Basti."

His message went down well on social media, with numerous fans reaching out to thank the German icon for his words.

Schweinsteiger retired in 2019, bringing an end to an illustrious career where he won a plethora of titles at club and international level.

A total of 121 caps for Germany puts him fourth on his nation's list for all-time most appearances, behind only Lothar Mathaus, Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski.

During his spell with United, Schweinsteiger won the FA Cup in his debut campaign - part of a 17-trophy haul from club level in his career.
