Bass still biting in spite of the heat

Despite the hot weather, bass continue to bite in South Florida's urban lakes and canals.

Tim Celesti and Wesley Gall caught 21.44 pounds of largemouth and peacock bass Sunday to win the Glades Masters club tournament on the Lake Ida chain of lakes. They used hard jerkbaits to catch their fish in the south lobe of Lake Osborne.

Tim Rose and Joe Irene were second at 19.14, and Rose had the big bass of the tournament at 6.73.

Joe D'Orio and Ricardo Arbesu were third at 12.95, followed by Doug Harris and Carl Bousquet at 12 and Hank Krieg and Steven Forssell at 10.23.

For Capt. Alan Zaremba of Hollywood, sight-fishing with his AZ Jungle Jigs was producing peacock bass in urban canals. The key is to wear a quality pair of polarized sunglasses so you can spot the fish or see them flash on the jig when you pitch it to the bank or a ledge.

Mason Cargill and his brother-in-law Don Slycinsky, both of Charleston, S.C., caught 25 peacocks up to 4.5 pounds fishing in the C-100 Canal in Kendall.

Zaremba also reported good fishing for largemouth bass in the smaller Everglades canals using Bagley Minnow jerkbaits that were allowed to sit longer than usual on the surface and twitched to elicit a strike.

Ted Sander of Cooper City and Zaremba caught 30 largemouths up to 5 pounds, five Mayan cichlids, some bluegills and spotted sunfish on a morning trip in the Brown's Farm canal. Tim Gray of Coral Springs caught 14 largemouths up to 2.5 pounds on a morning trip at Brown's Farm.

Before he made the switch to Brown's Farm, Zaremba guided Bob and Barbara Moorman of Plantation and their grandsons Robert, 11, and Chris, 8, to five largemouths on a morning trip along Alligator Alley.
