Baseball star sickeningly hit in head by drive during Oakland vs Chicago White Sox clash

Oakland Athletic pitcher Chris Bassitt is said to be "conscious and aware" after a scary incident on Tuesday night left him with a horrific head injury and needing to be taken to a local hospital.

In a tweet from their official page, the team announced that their player was doing okay.

The tweet reads: "Chris Bassitt is conscious and aware, and is on his way to the hospital. We will provide additional information when possible."

The A's lost the match against the Chicago White Sox 9-0.

Manager Bob Melvin said after the game that Bassitt was fortunate in that he was never unconscious, and the ball missed his eyes.

Melvin said: "We don't think the eye is a problem at this point. It felt like it was below it. He's got some cuts that [need] some stitches," said Melvin, who took no questions. "He's in a scan and we'll know more about potential fractures tomorrow."

After suffering the horrendous blow, Bassitt instantly dropped to the floor. The ball left White Sox player Chris Goodwin's bat at over 100mph.

Several players from both teams rushed to Bassitt's aid quickly at the pitcher's mound where he remained for a few minutes. He was eventually helped onto a golf cart and taken from the field.

Goodwin did not face the media after the game but did tweet out his own message of support. He wrote: "Chris, you are in my prayers for sure brother."

Both teams managers and players were clearly shaken by the event. Chicago's manager Tony La Russa said: "We're all really hoping that he escaped with just a bruise.

"There was a dark cloud around that whole game."

Meanwhile, the White Sox pitcher Reynaldo Lopez expressed his own shock.

Lopez said to the press: "When you see something like that, it's hard to digest because ... as a pitcher, we know that that can happen.

"It's like, that could happen to me and it's scary. Every time you see something like that it is tough to swallow.''
