Some home-run showboating ultimately led to this player taking on an entire team in an MLB brawl

It started with a batter soaking up a home run just a bit too much, and ended with a teammate seemingly taking on the entire opposition in a sensational all-in brawl in a Major League Baseball clash.

Cincinnati Reds right-fielder Yasiel Puig threw down with the entirety of the Pittsburgh Pirates team, plus its support staff, in incredible scenes as players rushed in to either join or quell the fracas.

The seeds for the battle royale in Pittsburgh were sown when the Reds' Derek Dietrich smashed a home run off the Pirates' Chris Archer, the ball sailing out of the stadium and into the nearby Allegheny River.

Dietrich stood in the batters' box and openly admired the no-doubt homer, something considered a bit naughty in the conventions of baseball.

That saw Archer throw behind Dietrich the next time the Reds player was at bat — aggressively pitching just wide of the evading batter's back — prompting the plate umpire to step in.

The umpire warned both benches, with Reds manager David Bell arguing the pitcher should have been ejected from the match.

By this point, players from both dugouts were heading toward the field, before Puig took prominence, lunging towards the whole group of Pirates players, grabbing their coach Tom Prince in a headlock.

The fight saw Puig, teammate Amir Garrett, Bell and the Pirates' Felipe Vazquez and Keone Kela all ejected.

Images of the fight quickly became a trending topic online.
