Baseball legend David Ortiz condition update after he was shot in nightclub attack

Former Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz has made significant progress in his recovery as he moved out of intensive care after being shot in the back earlier this month.

Ortiz's wife Tiffany said in a statement released by the baseball team that the hitter is in good condition - nearly two weeks after he was shot in his native Dominican Republic.

Tiffany's statement says: "David was moved out of the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"He remains in good condition and continues to recover under the care of Drs David King and Larry Rondan."

Ortiz underwent two surgeries to treat the gunshot wound, including a procedure that removed his gallbladder and part of his intestine.

The bullet entered Ortiz's back and exited through his abdomen, his father told the reporters.

The baseball legend, known as 'Big Papi' was shot while seated at Dial's disco, an alfresco nightclub in the capital Santo Domingo, on June 10.

Dominican authorities have since concluded that Ortiz was not the target of the attack and the shooter meant to target Sixto David Fernandez, a friend who was sitting at the same table.

Television host Jhoel Lopez was also wounded in the shooting.

According to Dominican Police, 11 people have been arrested in connection with the attack, including 25-year-old Rolfi Ferreira Cruz, who police said admitted to being the person who shot Ortiz.

Ortiz, 43, is widely revered in Boston for helping the Red Sox win three World Series championships, including the memorable 2004 title that broke an 86-year drought for the club.

He retired after the 2016 season while still one of the best hitters in the game, making the Major League Baseball All-Star team that season while leading the league in several statistical categories.
