Baseball Ireland: Cane still able as champions get back to winning ways away to Mariners

Mariners 3 Hurricanes 7

The Mariners welcomed back into town the defending champion Hurricanes on Sunday.

The Mariners had taken the first meeting on a walk off, and it figured to be another tight affair between these two.

It proved to be so as both starting pitchers, Leo Farrell and Darius Marius held things tight through the first couple of innings. In the 3rd Daniel Woodburne relieved Leo and continued the good pitching.

Scoring wise, The Mariners ran themselves into trouble on the basespaths early, squandering numerous scoring opportunities and it was the Canes who took the lead. A returning Chuck Adams got things going for the Mariners in the 4th with a 2 out, 2 rbi knock.

Woody was pitching a fine game in relief of Leo, but the Canes were able to grind out a 3-2 lead as the Mariners surprisingly continued to leave runners on base without scoring.

By the time Woody came in to score on a Danny Barclay rbi single in the 7th the score had stretched out to 6-3 in favour of the Dublin team and they would tag one more on late to make it 7-3.

A good day for Danny Barclay though as he contributed a total of 4 hits.

The Mariners would live to rue many a missed opportunity as the record fell to 2-2 on the season.
